Chapter 27: Fail

Dawnstar padded over to Ambermoon and Foxtail, who were eating quietly.

“It’s time to go,” Dawnstar meowed sharply.

The two warriors nodded silently and stood up. Ambermoon glanced toward Fiercefang, who was retrieving Copperfang from the nursery.

“Here they come,” Foxtail whispered.

Dawnstar flicked her torn ear and turned toward the other warriors.

“We’re leaving now. We will be going to the Great Plateau. It’s not to far from here but it’s outside of the territory, so be on your guard.

The four warriors nodded and quickly trotted off after the brown tabby.

Dawnstar growled in irritation as thunder boomed overhead. “Be careful while climbing up the Plateau, it’ll be slippery.”

Ambermoon nodded and flicked her tail tip as she followed Dawnstar. Copperfang and Fiercefang trailed after the she-cats confidently. Foxtail rolled his eyes as Fiercefang tripped and bumped into the cliff wall.

“Careful mousebrain! Suntail might think we’re throwing squirrels at her from the forest with all that noise,” Foxtail hissed.

Fiercefang snorted at the russet cat and quickly ran after the battle patrol.

Dawnstar glared over her shoulder at the two toms.

“Shut up! For all we know, Suntail will be the one to throw squirrels at us if you all don’t remain silent and cautious of your surroundings!” Dawnstar hissed loudly.

She shook her head irritably but continued along the path. Dawnstar almost yowled when thunder boomed overhead and she slipped toward the edge of the path. Ambermoon quickly ran to Dawnstar’s side and shoved her closer to the wall.

“Watch out!” Ambermoon whispered.

Dawnstar nodded and silently padded behind Ambermoon. Ambermoon leaped and stepped aside so the rest of the patrol could follow. Dawnstar’s gaze wandered the plateau, looking for anything that could harm the patrol.

A flash of lightning went off closeby, which caused everyone’s vision to black out from the bright light. Dawnstar bared her teeth and flattened her ears as Suntail, Darkshade, Icegaze, and Whitefang all came into view after the lightning.

In response, Suntail positioned her tail parallel to the ground and began sweeping it side to side. The Dark Forest warriors behind her fanned out.

Dawnstar did that same.

Fiercefang growled and unsheathed his claws. Foxtail and Copperfang let out short battle cries before unsheathing their claws. Ambermoon smirked and glanced at Dawnstar. Dawnstar nodded and walked a fox length toward Suntail while she did the same.

“Hello Dawnstar. It’s nice to see that you’re still loyal to a fault.”

Dawnstar hissed and unsheathed her claws. “I could say the same for you Suntail. Let’s end this filthy quarrel with your blood on my claws!”

Suntail smiled and stood taller. “No kit can kill me.”

Dawnstar flicked her tail tip. “I am no kit!”

Suntail flicked her ear, allowing the battle to begin. Darkshade let out a roar of anger and launched herself toward Copperfang. Copperfang leaped ahead, smashing into the black she-cat and tumbling in a blur of teeth and claws.

Whitefang and Icegaze quickly trotted toward Foxtail and Fiercefang and surrounded them. Foxtail reared with Fiercefang and began to parry the warrior’s attacks. Icegaze hissed and rushed the red tom. Foxtail smashed his paws down on Icegaze’s shoulders. Icegaze yowled in anger and attacked Foxtail’s tucked tail.
