Dawnstar opened her eyes, blinking sleep away quickly.
She winced silently and licked her small wound. It had been two moons the training had begun with Suntail and Ambermoon.
So far, she had gained Suntail’s trust, which led to the meeting of Darkshade, Icegaze, and Whitefang.
Together, the six cats trained every night and practiced several new fighting techniques.
Over the time, however, Snowstorm had began to trust Dawnstar less and less, and Dawnstar had become frustrated that her sister wouldn’t help her with the prophecy any more.
Thornpetal lowered her gaze and began speaking in a nervous voice.
“Dawnstar, their have been signs that the wolves have returned. I couldn’t tell how many, but I’m guessing at least three have returned. I could only imagine the destruction Hoshi could cause with his pack.”
Dawnstar hissed in response.
“Double the amount of cats on the border patrols. Make sure that no one leaves camp without at least one other warrior to watch their backs. If someone gets hurt, I will personally trot out of the territory, find Hoshi, and kill him myself!” Dawnstar yowled.
Thornpetal took a step back at her friend’s sudden violent turn.
“Dawnstar, are you okay? Should I fetch Snowstorm?” Dawnstar hissed, anger flaring up inside her.
“Unless she’ll help me with the issue, I don’t want or need her help!” Dawnstar roared.
Thornpetal backed away from the furious leader and quickly trotted out to speak with Snowstorm.
* * * * *
Thornpetal trotted toward Snowstorm, the snow crunching lightly beneath her paws.
Recently, there had been some snow here and there, but nothing as extreme as the sudden storm two moons earlier.
“Snowstorm, I need to talk to you in private."
Snowstorm looked up and padded into the medicine den, her long, white fur blending in with the snowy camp.
She adjusted herself so that she was in the back of the den before responding.
“What do you need?” Snowstorm whispered.
Thornpetal sighed and decided that her suspicions had lasted long enough.
“Ever since the storm, Dawnstar has been less and less like herself. She’s constantly angry with everyone if they bring up something that’s leading to the clan’s suffering. Do you now what might be causing her to be so edgy?”
Snowstorm looked guiltily at her paws.
“I’ll tell you if you fetch Fiercefang and Frostfang, I think they should know as well.”
Thornpetal nodded and flicked her tail.
“Fiercefang, Dappleheart, and Mistyrain on a border patrol. They wanted to see how close the wolves were to the border and to see if they could figure out an estimate of when they would attack. I ordered them to not engage if they find them and to return back here before sunhigh.” Thornpetal meowed, trying to remember how long ago she sent them.
“I’ll be back soon, I need to check on Crescentsky and then send out another hunting patrol.”
Snowstorm nodded and began to sort through a small pile of herbs.
Thornpetal continued along toward the nursery and sighed.
I’m glad to finally be getting some answers. I’m so sick of Dawnstar’s act that I would knock some sense into her if I had the courage.
