Mackenzie's POV
It's the day of the dance. Friday, October 31st. This can go either really well, or a complete disaster.
"Hey mom, can I ask you something?" I ask, approaching the monster.
"What is it Mackenzie? I'm busy," mom said.
She's really not. She's trying to tan. It's fucking October in Pittsburgh, is she stupid or something?
"Well mom, I was wondering, since I've been working so much in the diner, and I still have straight A's in school. I was wondering if I could go to the dance tonight?" I ask.
She looks up at me, she stands up and towers over me. I mean I'm only 5'0 tall.
"What kind of question is that?! You know the answer is no! You have work to do at the diner," mom answered scoffing.
"Mom, I've been working everyday, every week. I still have all A's in school. Please just one day off," I begged.
"Mackenzie, sweetie," mom said, she placed her hand on my shoulder. "You know you don't want to go. You just want to fit in. Think, you need to work to get money for college. It's worth it in the end."
I sighed and nodded. I know I'm not winning this fight.
-
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE SAID NO?!" Carson panicked.
We're in the diner and I just told him that I can't go to the dance.
"I told you guys she'd say no," I sighed.
Then they come in. Nadia, Johnny, Hayden, Lauren, Jacob and Brynn. The only nice ones in there are John and Lauren. They aren't conceded.
I sighed and had to serve the damn table. I didn't want to. I'd rather let them starve.
"Hi I'm-"
"Diner girl, can I get my breakfast now?" Jacob asked.
I looked down at my feet. I want to crawl into a corner.
"What do you have that's fat free, grease free, sugar free and gluten free?" Nadia asked.
I looked at her bewildered. "Water," I answered.
"Are you joking?" Nadia scoffed.
"No I'm not."
"We'll take six Voss waters," Brynn said.
"I'm sorry but we only have water from Pittsburgh."
"Are you joking?" Brynn scoffed.
"No I'm not. Again."
"We'll have six sweet teas please," Lauren said.
I nodded and walked over to get their drinks. Fucking spoiled brats. I get all their drinks and give it to them.
"Do you want anything to eat?" I ask.
"No thanks, just the drinks," John said.
I sense a sort of tension between everyone. Then Nadia gets up and leaves. So does Brynn and Jacob. Hayden and Lauren hesitate to leave, but after a moment they do.
John sighs and stands up. He takes money out of his wallet.
"No don't worry. On the house," I say.
"No seriously take it," John insisted.
I can't really fight him. I just nodded and take it. He smiled at me weakly and then leaves. I sighed and one of the other waiters take care of the table.
