Mackenzie's POV
"Mackenzie, you okay?" Carson asked.
Him and Ruby just walked into the diner. They left right after school had ended. Now they're here to annoy me.
"Yes I'm fine," I lied.
I served food to a table then returned to the bar. I got them some drinks and started cleaning the counter.
"No you're not fine Mack! You left in the middle of school," Ruby said.
"Look, I didn't want to deal with it today. I didn't want to deal with Madison and everyone," I say.
"Madison is trying to be your sister for once in sixteen years Mack, don't you want that?" Carson asked.
I sighed and stopped what I was doing. I look at them and shrugged.
"I don't know okay. You both know I lost all hope that her or my mother loved me when I was thirteen. I don't think any of that is going to change."
"What if it is Mack? What if your sister actually wants to be your sister?" Ruby asked.
"Then my dad resurrected from the dead because that's something that takes miracles," I say.
"We're being serious Kenzie," Carson said.
"I am too! Look Madison doesn't want to be my sister, her friends don't want to be nice to me and John... John doesn't want to be with me."
"Yes he does!" They exclaimed.
"No he really doesn't. Guys look I know you think that I'll be happy with John and everything but, let's be real. It's something that happens in fairytales. There's always a happy ending by falling in love. It's not real," I explained.
They don't say anything. "Are you going to the game with us tonight?" Carson asked.
"I can't I'm working," I say.
"Just think about it," Ruby said.
"Okay fine," I say.
They nodded then left. All I could do was let out a groan of frustration.
-
I didn't go to the game Friday. It's been a whole weekend. I'd hope that everyone would move past all the drama and everything, but I was wrong.
I walked into school Monday and everyone was still mocking me for those stupid texts. I haven't really tried to talk to anyone. John hasn't even texted me.
I know I blew him off but I thought he was different. I thought he cared. I guess I was wrong.
"Hey diner girl, had your first kiss yet?" Some guys mocks.
I roll my eyes and keep my head low as I pass through the halls. I don't look up, I don't look at anyone. I just keep my eyes towards the floor.
"Mack you okay?" Carson asked.
I shot him a look and he instantly shuts up.
"Why didn't you come to the game?" Ruby asked.
"Why did you go? I thought you hated school spirit," I said.
