Poe's body went rigid as they entered the planet's gravity. When they finally hit the surface is when the true terror set in. First Order TIEs were everywhere and they seemed to have made it their personal mission to destroy him with extreme predigest. Luckily, Poe knew what was coming for him and he prepared himself.
When a TIE chased him he headed into a sharp bank turn with the TIE struggling to copy his movements. He used every trick that he possibly could and probably spent more of his time upside down then he did right side up. That didn't bother him in the slightest. In fact, excitement made his fingers tingle and sweat with pure excitement and nervousness. IT was as if this was his first time flying.
He made the final bank turn and finally had the TIE in his sight. He fired once and the TIE dropped to the surface in a puff of fire and smoke. Poe mentally cheered for himself as he pumped his fists. He smiled as he turned and went after another one that was flanking one of the newbies that Hawn had spoken to earlier.
He easily took that one out as well as seven others in his route. He felt his old reflexes come into play as he let it take control. He inwardly cheered as each new one went down and he didn't have to struggle that much at all. He didn't want to get cocky or anything, but he felt like he was doing a fairly good job.
"Keep applying pressure," he called to all of the surrounding fighters. "The sooner that they're isolated the sooner that they fall!"
That seemed like good advice to give. Poe's stomach churned as they fought off the remaining TIEs as well as some prototype ships that he hadn't seen before. They had a lot of weapons, but they weren't very fast and it didn't scare Poe at all. They were just loud and could be dangerous if you didn't know how to approach them.
Once that was finished Poe saw a few of the larger ships begin to land. He smiled to himself. "Wait for General Leia's signal and then we'll be heading back. Good job to everyone!"
The sound of cheers filled his helmet before he turned it off quickly. He hovered around a bit after that just to make sure that everything was quite. Once it was, he just stood around Leia's ship. He couldn't see anything, but he wanted to think that BB-8 might be somewhere down there.
Leia's signal came soon after that and Poe led the fighters out of the system and back to the base. It had been a fairly straightforward attack. He was sure that there had been casualties, but not nearly as many as the other day. That put Poe a bit more at ease.
The flight back to the Resistance was fairly straightforward. There wasn't any interference and there was barely anyone talking over the main comms. It seemed like there was a peace of the Resistance for once and that really didn't happen. They flew to the landing platform and Poe landed where his ship always landed. He let out a breath of relief as he opened the top and started to climb out. The fresh air was always appreciated in Poe's mind. After all, the air inside was filtered, but this air had with it the smells of the Resistance. Poe swore he could smell freedom in the air.
He started to climb out of the fighter and assess it for damage. There were a few more scuffs from one close call, but it wasn't anything that couldn't be patched or pained over. He would find someone from maintenance and they would be able to patch it up read quick.
He was just about to head to the mess hall when the sound of rolling jolted his attention. He turned sharply and saw BB-8 rolling up to him quicker than he had ever seen his droid roll to him before. All of his lights were flashing as he headed around in a circle, making the loudest noises that he possibly could. Poe just laughed as he watched him go around in circles, just exciting himself at the fact that he saw Poe right in front of him.
"Yes, yes, I'm here," Poe told him as he kneeled down to be on his level so that he could show his excitement right back.
BB-8 pushed against him and Poe had to struggle not to fall over. "No," he chided harshly as BB-8 kept dancing and swirling all around him. He laughed as he watched the way BB-8 seemed to celebrate. He rushed around and beeped so loud that it caused Poe to try and quite him down just a bit. Other people were trying to work. "I know. I missed you too. I promise that I wouldn't ever get a replacement, you know that."BB-8 gave a few more concerned beeps as he looked up at Poe.
"I'm okay, I promise. I know that you didn't want to leave me, but you had to. You're very important to the Resistance," he reminded BB-8 as he gave him a small poke on his dome.
BB-8 spiraled it around madly before he rolled around some more, making more excited beeps. Poe rolled his eyes as he rested his hand on BB-8's dome to try and calm him down.
"Poe?!"
Poe thought that he recognized that voice. He turned and in surprise he saw Finn rushing toward him. Poe smiled as Poe came over, wearing that jacket that he had been wearing when he was captured by Kylo Ren.
"You're alive," exclaimed Finn.
"Yeah, and is that my jacket," Poe asked as he squinted his eyes.
Finn nodded and tried to wriggle out of it, but Poe raised his hands. "No, keep it. It looks good on you," he told Finn with a small smile.
Finn practically glowed before he remembered the true reason that he was here. "Poe, I need your help."
