June 2nd, 2016I checked my phone every few minutes as I walked to the corner store with Vaughn. We were just leaving the basketball court, the evening was finally settling down and the sun was peeking right between the palm trees at the end of the street, letting me know that dusk was slowly approaching.
"Nah, bro. People really be making twitter a life style."
"What you mean?" Vaughn questioned.Earlier that day, after church, we had watched an episode of Everyday Struggle hosted by Joe Budden, Dj Akademiks, and Nadeska Alexis. Vince Staples was their guest star and they went through an abundance of different topics as well what it meant to do certain things for the culture.
Vince challenged this theory by questioning what exactly was black culture in the first place. Was it a real thing, or was it just a trend that people yet again decided they wanted to be apart of through social media?
The man was honestly a genius and didn't get the credit he deserved. At the age of twenty-three, mentally, he was way ahead of his time.
I pulled out a strawberry Snapple from the refrigerator before closing it and turned to look at Vaughn as we stood to the back of the four isles that took over the wee store.
"It's like what Vince said. If one person start saying the same thing enough times, I guarantee you everybody else gone start saying it too. It's like a domino affect. That's why social media weird sometimes because people just follow the wave and be hypocrites at the same damn time."
Vaughn stared, processing what I was saying. Growing up, we always had deep talks like this. It was one of the main reasons I messed with Vaughn so heavily. He wasn't just my best friend or my homeboy. I could confide in him from one young man to another and he would tell me when I was dead wrong about something and vice versa.
He never blocked out new knowledge. We learned from each other as well as our surroundings. Too many men were afraid to have real talks with their friends or even family and express their emotions because they thought it was gay.
But no, what Vaughn and I had was a true brotherhood. He would ride for me just like I would for him. We both were gonna eat and me moving away for that short period of time was only a mere stepping stone to the bigger goal.
In a way, I was grateful social media became a thing as I grew up because it allowed him and I to stay in touch, but nothing could beat physically being reunited with someone I had such a great bond with.
I put my hand on Vaughn's shoulder and ran my finger over my nose.
"Like check this out bro, cause this applies in the real world too." I paused. "Before Michael Jackson passed, nobody was messing with him if you really think about it. After that whole entire situation with him supposedly molesting them little white kids people basically violated his whole entire career. Then when he passes, all of a sudden he a legend again."
"He never stopped being a legend though. He's Michael Jackson." Vaughn argued.
"I know, but just think about it. Besides all of his many accomplishments, when that shit happened, people basically said eff him and didn't even have all the facts yet. Niggas didn't even have the paperwork and people was already calling him a child molester and everything else under the sun."
