Everything is cloudy. I reach to rub my eyes but the feeling of cold air wrapping around my hand stops me. I look left, pain lacing up my side. Adam is slumped in the chair beside the bed, his paw closed around air where my hand once was. I look down at the blanket gently wrapped around my legs and notice my brace rests at the end of the bed. What happened?"Adam." My throat burns. "Adam!" I rasp again my hand lightly wrapping around his thick wrist. A white bandage is wrapped around my palm.
I shake Adam lightly startling him out of his sleep. "What-" Adam sits up. He hold my gaze, his eyes turn glassy before sliding onto the side of my bed suddenly wrapping his upper body around my body like a child. He buries his head in my hair. Pain flares up in my side. "Adam!" I groan my hands clamping onto the pain in hopes of getting rid of it.
"I was so worried. Your skin started to turn black with bruising we didn't know what to do." He sits back away from me and gently pulling the blanket away from my body and gently pulling away the fabric of the shirt I was wearing that was thrice my size. On my side stretching from under my armpit down my ribs and stopping just before the edge of my pants is an almost completely black bruise, hints of red and purple splattered between the sections of dark tender skin. I slide my fingers across it gently but still hiss in pain.
"I just want to know. Who did this? Who hurt you?" He speaks softly pulling the blanket over me again. The memory still fresh in my mind I nod. "Gaston. He's my cousin. He came to me two weeks ago, the week I locked myself away from you; he said I was making my mother miserable and that I needed to come home. When I went to villeneuve earl- wait how long have I been asleep?" Adam sits calmly at my feet. "A day and a half." I nod.
"Well I went to the bakery and spoke to my mother. She wanted to know why I wouldn't come home. So I told her-" I my voice cracks as I shudder a breath. "I told her it stopped being my home when she beat my for papas death. She sent gaston to 'talk' to me about making my mother cry. He wanted to know your name, how you treated me, and then he hit me when I didn't tell
Him. He left me in the alley, both times. I came back to find you standing in the door and I panicked. I was so afraid of you being mad at me. I don't know why."Silent tears slip down my bruised cheek. I go to rub them away but Adam stops me with a gentle paw. "Don't, you'll hurt yourself more." He tells me sliding across the blanket to sit beside me against the headboard. I curl into his side despite the pain. He wraps an arm around my shoulders pulling me closer to him.
"Master? I know I asked you at lunch but I- OCÉANA!" Ms. Potts pops around the large door. She seems to radiate joy as she hustled across the stone floor and onto the bed. She presses against my stomach as if hugging me which I return with one arm.
"Oh my dear! You had us all worried. Oh my! I must go tell everyone. Oh they will be so relieved." She scurries off overjoyed. I laugh, a smile burning my cheeks. "So much for quiet." Adam sighs causing me to laugh again. "Hey. How do you think it feels to not know why your friend is suddenly bruised and unconscious?" I hum. A look of devastation passes over Adams features. "It feels like everything you love and care about is being ripped from you piece by piece until you are in so much pain you go numb with the loss."
I loose a breath of shock. Had I caused so much pain for them? Do I truly mean that much to them? I didn't think it was possible for anyone to care so much.
"Adam. Im so- oh I'm so so sorry. I never meant to cause anyone-" "to them you are family now. To me you-" he cuts himself off abruptly looking towards the door just as the sound of elephants storming up the stairs echo through the stones.
Lumière busts through the door, a look of a mix of joy and relief burning in his face. Chip slides in next, a look of absolute and pure happiness making him smile. Ms. Potts behind him with the same relieved smile on her own face. Lastly a new face flutters through the door. A white feather duster, still beautiful and pure, an unsure but relieved smile on her face as Lumière wraps an arm around her.
"Océana. Madam! You are okay!" Lumière climbs up into the bed. He hugs me as tightly as he can without burning me. "Océana! Mama said you weren't feeling good. When you're better can we play?!" Chip asks after I hug him too. "Of course we can." I smile warmly as he goes back to Ms. Potts.
"Océana. Allow me to introduce mon chère. My darling plumette." Lumière introduces waving the feather duster forward. Her eh the wings sweep out allowing her to hover centimeters from the surface of the bed. "Bonjour madam. Lumière has told me SO much about you." She tells me making a bow like gesture.
"A pleasure to meet another women. Now the teams are even. The boys no longer out number us." I joke. The boys laugh. "Alright now. Let's give Océana a chance to rest. Master, would you like something to eat?" I look to Adam who seems to have slumped against the headboard to avoid being seen. "Has he not eaten?" I ask Ms. Potts. "No my dear. He refused to leave your side wouldn't eat anything either. Can't say I blame him, we were all worried for you." She shakes her head. "Not rig-" "yes! Please Ms. Potts bring him a something to eat." I cut off Adam. She nods ushering chip out the door. "I'll be right back with a bowl of soup. Anything for yourself deary?" "Can I have a lemon tea please?" "Of course, I'll be back up in a jiff."
Once the door closes I pull away from Adams side. "You didn't eat! That is terrible why would you do such a thing?!" I scold him. Adam shrinks into the bed, his horns scraping the head board behind him. "Oh don't try and hide Adam. That is really immature. Please don't do something like that again. Ever." I sigh taking Adams hand. His fingers wrap around my own squeezing for reassurance.
"Please don't leave me again." He answers after a minute. I nod resting against his shoulder again. "I promise."
