The town was small, seemingly innocent. It was beautiful, full of life, buzzing with conversation, but in this town, there was someone new, someone with a bloodline that brought trouble. Curses and history that should stay buried do come to the surf...
"Guys, we should head outside." Ana suggests. We all agree and pad outside. Amber walks forward, looking at the sky.
"Uhm Ana, Aris?" I say, gesturing for them to stay put.
"We'll be over there in a second." I call out.
She nods and walks to the water.
"So.. She accidentally saw my book."
"Ah, Jace.." Ana says, and exhales.
"Ana," Aris interrupts before she scolds me. "She obviously didn't care." His face wiped of emotion.
I smile at him and he nods in return. Ana sighs.
"Okay, whatever. I'll chill."
We stand in silence until Ana turns and puts her hands to the sides of her lips.
"Amber!" she calls, and Amber looks over, hesitating to walk over, deciding if we would be bothered, so instead?
She waves.
I crack up. Ana stares at me with glare, but I know she's amused as well.
"Boo." Ana calls out. Amber cracks out a grin.
She sits on the ground, criss cross.
The girl is forcing us to walk over!
Clever.
We walked over and Amber stands up.
"Thanks for saving me some calories I'd rather keep." She gestures to her thighs. She was a little skinny.
Suddenly she snaps her head up. "Did you hear that?"
"Hear what?" Ana asks and Aris and I exchange looks.
Amber furrows her eyebrows. "It sounded like a cry for help."
I didn't even hear it. My hearing is... very good.
She snaps her head behind hernquickly. "I heard it again!" She turns her entire body.
She starts walking. Towards a forest. Did she hear it there?
"Wait, Amber!" Ana shouts.
Amber stops and pinches her nose. "What if there's someone out there? I don't want to avoid that. I want to help." With that, she looks back at us with passion and regrets in her eyes.
We froze at the statement. The words could mean completely nothing, it was how she said it.
She said with such passion, guilt, it hurt.
Amber turned back and started with a walk that developed into a run.
I look at Aris and he grits his teeth.
"Amber! Wait!" Aris calls out, and I look at him. Since when did he have emotion?
"Aris, what is it?" I question. He runs his hand through his hair, nervous.
"She's in that forest. Not just any forest, the forest."
Ana looks at him and we all look back to Amber at the same time, but she was nowhere in sight.
This is bad.
