Amber

My eyes flutter open when awakening to the snapping of a branch.

"Hello?" I call out, my voice raspy. I push myself up with the little energy I have in me.

I look around me, and I see Jace about 20 yards away. I freeze. He walks towards me, taking in the surroundings.

"Oh, my word! Amber what happened?" He moves closer to me, and his thumb grazes my bottom lip, not giving me the chance to talk. I flinch at the affection, not used to it. "Your lip is busted." His eyes widen. "Stay here! Do not move!"

I hear him run over somewhere near, then Aris's voice pops up.

Well, hi Aris.

I hear them talking, but I can't make out words.

Jace comes back. "Sorry." I pinch my nose in response.

Worry takes on his face, and I just examine. "Why are you worried?" He just shakes his head.

I hear Aris's voice. "Jace, I went to tell Ana but she was gone. She must have caught the scent." As if on cue, she appears through the trees, her eyes a swirling crimson.

"There's blood?"She begins to run.

"Juliet?" I whimper. "I need you."

I get into a horse stance, keeping my balance as good as possible. "Ana, snap out of it."

"I think you got this." Juliet's voice echoes in my head.

"A chance against the supernatural? Really, Jewls?" I whisper.

"Leave me and my blood alone." The confidence in my voice takes her back a bit, and Ana, same.

I give the boys a look. A 'what-the-h*ll?'look.

Aris's eyes widen a little. Jace gapes at Aris.

I look back at Ana. She's much closer now.

I furrow my eyebrows and raise my voice. "I mean, I see why you don't wanna fight Ana but neither do I." I hiss.

Her hand suddenly is on my shoulder and she licks my neck. I shiver, displeased.

"Oh, so you're a witch? Virgin witches blood? Sounds like a treat to me." She sounded delighted. I glare at the boys.

Jace jumps at my stare and starts coming over. Aris does the same.

It's like their the same person. Ugh.

She sees them walking over, and an in an instant, she's bit into my shoulder. I choke back a gasp. The pain was like acid, pouring into your system. My shoulder burned, my health, weakened. I could barely move my body from its frozen stance, so I growled, "Get out of my shoulder."

I was even surprised how low and deadly my voice came out. Then, something just... happened. It's like something activated within my core, expanding rapidly, knocked her off me, and into a tree.

I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

Silence.

"Amber? How'd you do that?" Aris asks, breaking the silence.

My voice, now weary, I speak. "Has she ever bitten anyone before?"

"Not that I know of." Aris answers.

I let my legs unlock so I can fall. "That was the most pain I have ever felt, by a long shot. Way worse than the souls." Gripping my shoulder, I wince.

"The souls, like how I told you how I clawed for a life, were clawing you, their nails with toxins in it, causing you to weaken much faster.." Juliet explains to us all.

"Amber, I am so sorry." Ana says.

"It's okay Ana!" I say. "You didn't mean to."

She had tears rolling down her face. "I really thought I could control it. I really, really did."

She sobbed and Jace examined exposed wounds of mine, while Aris comforted Ana.

"Hope to meet again," Juliet says and disappears before I can say thank you.

"If I'm a witch," I say, still not believing it. "and Ana's a vampire, what are you two?"

"A... a shadow." Aris says, he looks irritated. I raise my eyebrow. He glares at the floor, showing he doesn't wanna talk about it.

"A werewolf." Jace says, his face bright red.

"We've been activated." Aris says, and we give him questioning looks.
