Chapter 7
Before long, rehearsals for High School Musical started, and my free time was quickly sapped up by all of the after school rehearsals and the process of memorizing my many lines. The only downside of having a lead role was all of the memorization, which Raquel graciously helped me with.
"I wish we could spend some real time together," Raquel commented during one lunch period. "This is the third time this week that I've had to help you memorize lines instead of just chatting."
"Me too, but my schedule will get better after the musical is over," I said.
"That's not for another month," Raquel said.
I sighed. "I know," I told Raquel. "I wish I had more free time too."
Dan and Arthur sat down next to us and started eating, while Raquel continued to help me with my lines. By that point, I had a lot of my lines memorized, but I still tripped up occasionally. Leona, to my annoyance, was still doing better than me in that respect.
"Hey, can you guys teach me some English curse words?" Dan interrupted. "I've always wanted to learn some of those."
"Dan, we're working on Nora's lines for the play," Raquel said, shaking her head. "Did you really need to interrupt us for that?"
"It's okay," I said. "We can take a break."
Arthur, Raquel, and I took a few minutes to think of all of the swear words that we knew before promptly teaching them all to Dan. Within a few minutes, Dan was spitting out nonstop profanities. He didn't quite grasp the usage of some of the words that we taught him, but it was still fun to listen to.
"Now that we've taught you all of that, can you teach us some Albanian swears?" I asked.
"Uh...I don't know any," Dan said. "Albanian is actually quite a clean language."
I didn't believe him, but at the same time, I didn't want to question him further. Arthur, on the other hand, kept pushing for answers. "I see through your lies, Dan," he said.
"I'm not lying," Dan said as he took a bite of his burrito. "I really do find your culture fascinating. The more I tell you something, the less likely you are to believe it. By the way, does this have avocados in it?"
"It depends on what you put in it," I said.
"Rice, beans, something called chicken, and something called guacamole," Dan said. "I don't really know what the last two are."
"Do you really not know what chicken is?" Raquel said.
"No, I don't," Dan said. "It is a food, right?"
"Yes, it is," I said. "It's meat that comes from a bird."
"Also, guacamole is made from avocados," Raquel pointed out.
"You eat animals?" Dan said. "That's just gross. I can't believe I just ate that, and I'm not supposed to eat avocados either!" Dan clutched his stomach. "I'm feeling very sick. Can somebody take me to the nurse?"
"I'll take you," Arthur volunteered. Arthur led Dan to the nurse's office, while Raquel and I continued to practice my lines. A few minutes later, Arthur returned. "I think this is just more proof that Dan's an alien," he remarked.
"Don't be ridiculous," Raquel said. "Dan couldn't be an alien."
"Think about it, Raquel," Arthur said. "I've never heard Dan speak Albanian and he doesn't know what chicken is. The only explanation for that is that he's not from Earth at all."
