Chapter 18
The Eclipse continued to accelerate away from Fei Lian, eventually escaping its atmosphere and flying into the depths of space. I closed my eyes, knowing that all of this would be over soon. We would be back in space, and hopefully, the Eclipse wouldn't need to stop again before we got to Sidhe.
Danger reoriented the ship once it was far enough away from Fei Lian. I opened my eyes again, took off my harness, and floated to the window. Once I saw the view from the window, I gasped.
Fei Lian was gone. There was nothing more than a cloud of black smoke with a bright white light at the center where the ringed planet had been, and the cloud seemed to be moving towards us. Danger tried to speed up the ship, but the Ink was faster than we were. Thankfully, the creature wasn't after us. It flew right past the Eclipse, clouding us in black smoke for just a moment before hurtling off into space. Danger tried to fire at the Ink, but the ship's rays didn't hurt the creature at all. It simply flew by and then disappeared.
I looked back one more time at the spot where Fei Lian had been. It was as if the planet had never been there at all.
My heart sank as I realized that Jourdain had undoubtedly been consumed along with her homeland. She had been so nice to us, yet she was gone too. I had only known her for a few days, but I missed her anyways. Jourdain didn't deserve to die.
"We're going to have to hurry," Danger said as he steered the spaceship towards the edge of the system. "The Ink can't destroy any more planets before we destroy it."
"I agree," I said. "Can we go any faster?"
"No," Danger said. "We're at the Eclipse's top speed right now. I wish I had a newer ship. My dad said that some of the newer spaceships can go twice this fast."
"That's true," Blaze said. "The XCL Interceptor and the Plasma Fighter 3500 can both travel at several hundred million miles per hour at their top speeds. However, both of those craft are currently restricted to professional pilots and are not on sale to the general public."
"There are ways to get around that," Danger said.
"Danger, don't even think about stealing another spaceship," Blaze said.
"You stole a spaceship?" Raquel said.
"I don't know what Blaze is talking about," Danger said. "I've never stolen a spaceship in my life."
Raquel rolled her eyes as Blaze crawled around the spaceship. "What was with that black cloud by the way?" Raquel asked. "I thought that was quite strange."
"Me too," I said. "I think it was the Ink."
"I think so too," Danger said.
"Where did it come from?" Raquel asked.
Danger shrugged. "Does it matter?" he asked. "It's obviously deadly, so we need destroy it. Who cares where it's from?"
"I bet the Martians created it," Arthur said. "It seems like something that they would do."
"Don't be silly, Arthur," Danger said.
"It's not silly," Arthur insisted. "Danger, which planets have been destroyed so far?"
"Just Fei Lian and parts of Eshu," Danger said. "I didn't know that the Ink could work that quickly before it destroyed Fei Lian."
"Where's Eshu?" Arthur asked.
"It's in the Alsafi system," Danger said. "That's where I'm from."
"I see," Arthur said. "Which species live on Eshu?"
