Chapter Thirty-Two: Azrael (or Jimmy whichever you prefer)
The look on his face was nothing other than completely shocked; stunned even. We were standing in a paused pulse of time where everything else around us was stopped. He didn't say anything for a while, and I was about to open my mouth to continue telling him of the spell. It was a powerful magic that was taken from the seven arch angels, and the Earth.
Everything had been set up perfectly for this moment. I needed a dark power to die today which Raphael so gallantly took care of, a family member's blood sacrificed which I stole from Adrian, the shareholder to the parasite, and now I only needed for the keeper of the rest of her soul to agree. After they consumated their Fate to each other, he therefore held and kept the rest of her soul within him. I couldn't cleanse her full soul when part of it was locked within another.
"No," I heard not only his voice, but the low rasp of his wolf behind it.
I stared intently at them, before sighing. I hoped it didn't have to come to this, but he needed to understand the grand scheme of life other than what he and Cora held together.
"There is more to life than just ensuring Cora is safe. This way she will be, but so will everyone else. Humanity will live on, and continue to grow and destroy themselves. The vampires will be handled and returned to hiding. I cannot kill Cyrus without causing one of my kin to fall. This is the only way -- I have the other angels on my side with this. Once Cora is no longer a hybrid, and Natalia is gone the power within all of us can swipe the memory of there ever being a hybrid. It will be an easy swipe because they will have no hybrid that can be sought out," I tried my hardest to convey the mesage. Raphael was a dense one from what I gathered. He seemed like a very one track mind, and his mind was consumed with Cora right now.
"Will she remember any of this?" He asked solemnly.
"No. It's part of being an angel. We protect humanity, and ignorance from all of this is bliss. We ensure that by swiping memories of all this from the humans. She would be no different,"
"What about the mate bond?" This was a real question I had expected. I didn't want to handle the question though, because there was a hard truth to it.
"What about it? I can't erase that. It's what Fate intended and I am not Fate nor do I have the intentions or power to deny Fate," I avoided what he really was looking for.
"I'll still fucking feel everything and she won't, right? I'll remember everything," He was growing angry with me, I could tell that much.
"Yes, you will feel the mate bond and she will not, but you don't have to remember. I can erase her existence from your memory too." It was the simplest fix to his problems. He could continue living life as though he had never found her. He could just be another mateless wolf endlessly searching until the end of the world.
"I can't let you give up her wolf, that should be her decision to make," Raphael was shaking his head furiously.
"Her wolf has already accepted, and made her choice clear. We're waiting on you Raphael," I started stepping away from him. Our time was coming to an end, and this was the time for him to make the big decision.
"Do it. Change her, take the memories too," His words were enunciated clearly. Despite having a deep voice, it cracked at the end with a sharp screech.
I started time again taking us out of a single moment. Raphael still remained planted above her body, giving her one last loving look before everything ended with a giant life altering flash of darkness. The darkness was then relit with a wave of light that weaved in and out of mind's taking away memories, and giving new ones.
This was better for everyone involved. Cora was lying peacefully in what appeared to be a slumber. Her chest was rising and falling gently, and slowly with each new breath. I pressed my palm to her forehead and implanted her new life into her mind.
I attempted to make the most pleasant memories but stick to the unfortunate reality. She was parentless, and had no one until she started off her new life by moving into a dorm room. From close observations, college was a fine place to start her out. She would learn a lot about herself as a individual and discover new people; humans. She would be able to connect with them, grow attached find love, get her heart broken and survive it all.
The worst of her concerns would be getting her yearly flu shot or having to work a twelve to four shift at the local fast food joint.
I felt the most sympathy for Raphael. He had a darkness much like his father brewing deep within him that was kept smothered, and well at bay with the aid of Cora by his side. I feared that keeping them apart would only allow that creature of resentment to grow and change him, but forcing them together would be breaking the angelic laws that we held.
If he happened to find her on his own, it would be as natural as the next wolf stumbling across their human mate. I wouldn't stop it, but I wouldn't help it.
This was exactly what everyone needed, a fresh clean slate. Staring down from above now as the others rearrangd the world and put pieces where they needed to be, I could already picture a new life flourishing in the deadened spot of the forest where so many had lost their lives. Even though they died, they were contributing to a new growth.
I clasped my hands and let out a relieved sigh that despite everything going against us, at all odds humanity managed to see another day. The wolves were the peace keepers between the darkness of the demonic vampires, and the frail expiramental humans.
Sometimes good things needed to fall apart, for even greater things to come together. An old story had to end in order for a new one to be written.
*****
Well, yes, Chapter 32 was planned to be short and epilogue like. The last 3 paragraphs were modeled after Chuck's internal monologue from the Supernatural Season 5 finale. I am sooo happy I finished this, even though this first draft is far from perfect. I thank all of you for continuing the journey with me.
There will be no epilogue. But there is a sequel and it will be titled "Fiend."
there is final a/n, acknowledgements, and faq to read --->
one final comment, vote & fan?
