Coal's P.O.V.:
"Look, if you don't do anything about this now, they will have no choice but to rule in her favor," Ben said, slamming a folder down on my desk. "Do you really want that, Mr. I Love My Privacy?"
I lowered the paper I was reading just enough to shoot him my signature scowl. He continued to rant like he didn't see my lack of enthusiasm for being interrupted, my office door had been closed for a reason.
I tuned him out and flicked my gaze back to the fax that
Uncle Max had sent me this morning. Whatever it is that they're using to knock out supers is out of their system fast, because Charlie's results came out clear.Oh fried fish eggs, I was hoping they were amateurs.
The paper got slapped out of my hands suddenly. "Coal, do something," Anti Gravity said, leaning across my desk with his palms flat on the oak surface.
"Marie Harrison is the least of my problems right now," I said slowly, lifting his hand up and pulling out the report. "And she isn't even your problem. You're supposed to be protecting Green Boots."
Tights groaned and straightened back up. He went to my door and opened it, grabbed the kid waiting on the other side and dragged him to the front of my desk. Green Boots, who lived up to his name, grinned at me.
"Hallo, Spark. Top of the morning to ye. How are you doing?" he asked. He stood awkwardly since Ben was still holding his forearm.
"Hey, Boots. It's going good, and you? How's Dora?"
"I'm watching him, just like you said," Tights interrupted. "Now what are you going to do about Marie? She isn't holding back any punches and we need to be there right now to make sure they don't rule in her favor."
I drummed my fingers and just stared at my twin, noting that his costume was still the same exact one he had in high school. What is it with that guy and his cape? Doesn't it ever get in the way? Like if you had to go to the bathroom, you'd have to roll it up and hold it in such a way that it wouldn't fall in... This just got awkward, let's pretend that I never even pulled up that image.
"Marie Harrison is an amateur. She does not know what she's doing, okay? Besides, if she happens to win, then guess who's going to be breathing down her neck? Gust and all the other villains." I shrugged. "They barely put up with the Special, they won't put up with her."
Tights stared at me hard for a long time and I held his stare. In my peripheral vision, I could see Green Boots fidget from foot to foot, probably feeling uncomfortable seeing us butting heads. But it wasn't the first time and it definitely will not be the last time.
At least he's not shooting his clichéd laser vision at me again. He must have learned his lesson, because the last time he did that I had more energy than I knew what to do with. I ended up not sleeping for almost a week and made it a point to keep him up for most of that time.
He still hates me for that.
"You know what, fine then," he eventually said, breaking the stare and leaving abruptly. A moment later and I saw him flying away as fast as he could from HQ.
I turned to Boots and sighed. "Well, I guess I'm watching you now."
"Ye don't need to babysit me. I can just go home and take the day off, I'm sure they don't know my identity."
