It was several long days later that I found myself on the rooftop of my favorite old brick building. It's been a while since I've been here just to hang out or get away from it all, ever since that night I immaturely proposed to Molly, actually.
Now it was close to midnight or well past midnight, I didn't know. All I know is that I haven't been able to sleep since Ben disappeared last week.
"Coal?"
I turned around and found Molly walking up to me carefully. Things haven't been exactly the greatest between us, we've hardly talked during the week, and it's been all my fault.
But I've seen the way Black Cobra looks at her, he's obviously head over heels for her. After a few days of trying to keep Molly's attention, I sort of gave up when it became apparent she was more interested in Cobra. She can pick who she wants; I'm done fighting. Or should I still be fighting for her? At what point does it stop being persistent and fighting for who you love and turns into nagging and desperation for someone who isn't trying in return?
There is a slight chance I'm overthinking this.
"Hey, Molly," I said quietly.
She touched my face carefully, her cool touch lowered my temperature enough that she could lean on me. "What's wrong, babe? You're so distant lately."
I looked down and met her wide gray eyes. She was right here in my arms, I didn't ask her to come. She came and found me all by herself. Is that considered fighting? With a sigh, I wrapped my arms around her body and leaned my head on her forehead. "I'll be fine."
Molly huffed and leaned back so she could see my face. "You know, when a girl says she's fine, she isn't. Is that the same way with guys?"
There was a long moment of silence as Molly kept her eyes fixed on mine. I chewed on my lip, wondering if and how I should say what happened. "Uncle Max?"
She frowned. "What about him?"
I cleared my throat and shifted my weight. "He's my father. And Benjamin isn't my brother, he's my cousin."
Molly's eyebrows raised in shock to what I had just dumped on her. I should have had more tact when I told her. "What? When did you figure this out?"
"Max told me last week."
She stepped out of my arms, looking confused and slightly betrayed. "And it took you this long to tell me?"
"I've been trying to come to terms with it, okay?" I winced when I realized it came out with more force than I expected. I sighed loudly and stepped closer to her, trying to close the distance that was coming between us. "Molly, I've just needed-"
She shook her head and stepped back. "I love you, Coal Black. I want to marry you and make you happy, but you need to be open with me first and you need to tell what's going on in that head of yours!"
"I don't even know what's going on in my head," I said as I ran my fingers through my hair. "Everything is just too much right now, it's going all wrong and there's nothing I can do to fix it."
Molly touched my arm. "You're not facing this by yourself, Coal. I'm right here with you."
Before I could believe her, her phone started ringing. She took her phone out of its hiding place and held it in front of her, the name 'Bryant' flashed on her bright screen clearly for me to see. I cocked an eyebrow wondering why her ex-boyfriend thought midnight was the perfect time to have a chat.
I don't care when Molly talks to other guys or laughs at their stupid jokes or hangs out with her guy friends, but for some reason, something about her renewed friendship with her ex really irked me.
