'Try to find him, and everyone you love will be taken away from you forever.'

That was the threat I got on my phone after Charlie told me Ben was taken. I knew everyone was waiting for me to snap or wondering what I was going to do to get Ben back, but I couldn't look for him, not when lives were at stake.

Whatever their intention was for taking supers, it wasn't to kill them. But they aren't afraid to shoot if I try to find them. The options weighed, it's less bloody to let them have their way than to risk innocent lives. I just hope this isn't twisted thinking on my part because this is tearing me apart.

In the meantime, I knew Cobra was talking bad about me behind my back, causing problems and spreading rumors. My actions and intentions were being twisted and all it would take now was one wrong step on my part for everyone to turn against me.

It's not a far stretch of the imagination, Charlie already doubted me. My best friend actually believed that I had it in me to kill someone. The thought was enough to make me mad, to make my blood boil. I can't kill someone, not even when my identity is at risk. I'm not like that. I hate violence, and anyone who is close to me knows this. I can't even sit through the newest superhero movies anymore.

And Charlie actually believes that I would kill her.

I gritted my teeth and jumped off a building, rocketing down to the ground and absorbing the shock. I shot back into the sky with a plan forming in my head faster than I could really think it though. The woman told me to pass that message that she's back to my father, Max. She can't threaten me if I just go to him and try to have a 'bonding' conversation, right? It won't be my fault if the conversation is accidentally steered to who this woman could be.

It was nearly nine at night when I arrived at Max's front door, dressed in jeans and waiting for him to answer the door. That's when I realized my bad timing. It was only a few hours ago that he had dropped the bomb on me and turned my whole world upside down. I hadn't realized how raw I was feeling, how worn out and angry I still was.

Before I could walk away, the front door opened and revealed to me Max. His face brightened up when he saw me. "Coal!" His smile immediately fled when he saw the look on my face, though.

Chill it, Coal. You need to get information without being obvious.

"Can we talk?" I asked, my voice sounded gruff to my ears. It didn't actually occur to me that I was very close to breaking down right then and there.

His smile reappeared. "Of course!" He hesitated a second. "I haven't eaten yet, do you want to talk over some food?"

Half an hour later, we were at the Friday Blues Diner, each with a plate of pancakes. Mine may or may not have contained chocolate chips and loads of whip cream. I should have been more mature and ordered something that wasn't on the children's menu.
