Coal is mad

Coal is mad. He's so mad he said I wasn't his best friend anymore, but he tells me that at least once a week so I don't really believe him anymore. Besides even if he won't admit it, this was a much better plan than his.

Someone obviously had to make sure Marie was safe, and that Gust wasn't going to mess with her again. Obviously, Coal could not take her to his home, because she's seen his face. Granted, she doesn't remember anything from the past few hours, but his face and signature scowl could trigger something.

Once Molly was at HQ, she gave Coal one of her lectures and Doctor Daniels was able to reset his wrist and put it in a cast. With him literally being tied up, it was only logical that I take Marie to a safe place, some Oliver guy across town.

I glanced over at the girl sitting next to me in the taxi. Her black hair was all messy and wild, and her skin was as pale as a sheet of paper. As far as she knows, she was dropped off at the Mars building by Smokey, and I'm a bodyguard who's going to keep her safe.

That story would be believable if my super strength were actually visible, like you know, actual muscle you can see instead of having stupidly skinny arms.

Marie looked over at me and caught me staring at her. I looked away quickly, but it was too late. "You're a bodyguard?" she asked, her voice was soft and shaky.

I nodded my head. "Yes, ma'am."

"You don't look very strong."

I drummed my fingers on my knee and shrugged, not really knowing how to respond to that. "Well, I'll keep you safe. So, no need to worry."

Marie was quiet for a moment. "What was your name again?"

"Charlie Roberts."

"Marie Harrison," she said with a smile, reaching across and shaking my hand. "Nice to meet you."

I shook it warily. As quickly as I could, I read her body language and inwardly scowled. "I already have a girlfriend," I said too soon, catching the last bit of information and immediately regretting I spoke.

Her body wasn't turned towards me. In fact, it was turned more towards the door than anything. No, Charlie Roberts, she definitely was not flirting with you.

Marie raised her eyebrows. "Um... Okay. Good for you."

An awkward silence settled into the cab. She kept glancing at me sideways every few minutes and shaking her head subtly. When she wasn't looking, I was cringing so hard and nearly pounding my fists into my face for being so stupid. I blame Coal for that cocky comment. I was very close to jumping out of the taxi when it pulled up to a red light.
