"Yes dad, I promise I'm fine." I muttered tiredly on the phone while walking towards the school I went to when I moved in with mom. The road was not too far a walk but it still took time. And my dad decided to take up that specific time to call me and remind me how dangerous it was living in Seoul all alone with only my mother who was always working.
It had become my dad's job to tell me about the dangers of living in my mother's birth country and I had no idea why he was so obsessed with where I went and whom I interacted with. It had now become the epitome for my suffering, if not for the fact that he was one of richest people in America and that I studied in one of the largest financial high schools, Hana Academy Seoul.
"Are you sure you don't want me to send David over there?" Dad asked, hope in his voice that I would agree to keeping that awful protector. Who would want a grumpy big muscled man following you around, watching you when you sleep, staring at your friends ready to tear them apart?
"Yes, I'm sure, David needs a break from me anyway." I smirked at the last part as I remembered how much of trouble I had been to him. I was never the obedient type, I was a rebel. I hated rules, loved to break them although I knew my limits. I wouldn't go so far as to make people take notice of me. My friends and I laid low and steady.
"I haven't thought of that but now that you've reminded me, I agree as well." I heard some humor in this one.
"Dad I'm at school, I'll talk to you later okay?" I ducked my head and hid my phone as I neared the school.
"We'll talk later and Yeon-ah? Please be careful okay?" He asked gently.
I sighed. "Yes dad, I'll be careful on the streets and in dark alleys."
"And be home by eight." He ordered.
"Yes." I was starting to get frustrated. Did we have to do this everyday?
"And don't go wandering off, Seoul is a big city, you could get lost-"
"Dad, I'm gonna be late!" I cried, laughing.
"Okay, I'm hanging up." He said.
I switched off my phone and shoved it down deep into my pocket. Then I let my eyes cast over the school grounds filled with students wearing their uniforms and carrying on with their lives. The place made me look into the whole story of my life.
I was living in Seoul, South Korea who happened to be full Korean and then she married my dad which made me half-American. Even though I was living in a small medium cozy house, no one had any idea how filthy rich I was. That was exactly how I wanted it to be. My friends knew nothing about my past or my life. I always kept my dad a secret. It seemed better off that way, I was equal to my friends who were fortunately able to live the life I had always wanted to live.
I sighed, running a hand through my long, slightly curly black hair before running off, keeping a tight grip on the strap of my bag.
My friends stood there, all three of them in a circle. "Guys!" I called, running to them.
All three turned and the smiles broke out. "Hey, good morning Sung Yeon, had a nice night?" Ellie asked so innocently that my smile disappeared before a groan came out.
"Oh gosh, I had the worst night ever!" I grunted. They were now going to tease the hell out of me. The school jock proposed to me the previous day and after I refused, he somehow, got hold of my email, my phone number and my profile account on a certain website where I read, sending about a thousand text messages throughout the night. The guy wouldn't let me sleep and he was complaining about why I rejected him.
"I'm unable to come up with the conclusion as to why you said no!" Yana exclaimed. See, even though we lived in South Korea Seoul, some of us had the perfect accent to speak English. We used our mother tongue whenever we needed to fool an unsuspecting foreign student who doesn't know more than two languages. Yep, we were evil.
