Chapter 9 || Lord, Please Save My Head!

Colton and I both received an earful from my mum when she found all three of us half-covered with paint while the wall which was meant to be painted still stood tall - half pink, half white. She began scolding us for wasting paint and somehow we've gotten from that topic to polar bears in the North Pole dying because of our childish behaviour.

She even scolded us for dragging Ro into this. "It's worse enough that you're not acting like your age, but you had to drag the poor little girl along with you too?"

Colton and I both knew that that was a rhetorical question so we didn't answer her. Ro however gave her a toothy grin and said, "It was fun!"

Mum's stare softened when she looked at Ro but then she turned back to us. "Never again?"

"Never again." I confirmed.

"Good." was all she said before she rolled out of the room.

"Phew!" Colton let out a long breath that he didn't know he was holding. "We got off easy."

I grinned at him. "She doesn't ground me and punish me. All she does usually is give me a scolding and then it's like the whole thing never happened before."

"Really?" Colton looked astonished.

I nodded. As if on cue, mum shouted to us to ask us if we wanted to eat some cookies.

"See?" I looked at Colton while smiling. He raised his eyebrows in amazement and grinned back at me.

"Let's get us some cookies!" he cheered while putting one hand around my waist. "Come on, Ro!" he lifted his other arm and brought her to his side and we walked together.

I was tip-toeing, trying my best to reach for the box which was sitting on top of the large cupboard in my room. The ladder was broken, so that option had to be crossed out. I jumped, my fingertips brushing the wooden box before my feet touched the floor again. I cursed my genes, making my height at only 5'3 and disabling me from doing anything that required a height taller than my frame.

"Colton!" I shouted.

His tall frame surely could help me with this. The box didn't contain anything besides an old dress, which I have not worn but I felt like looking at it today.

"Colton!" I called again.

I was expecting to hear his footsteps but to my surprise, I couldn't hear anything. Where is the boy? I walked out of my room.

"Colton?" I called out softly. I saw him crouching on the sofa looking at a picture. I crept slowly across the living room and walked over to him.

What scared me wasn't the fact that I was invading his privacy.

What shocked me wasn't the fact that he would most likely catch me red-handed right now.

What surprised me wasn't the fact that the picture on Maria's desk and his were exactly the same, no.

What actually startled me was the fact that he was gripping the picture so hard, almost as if he wanted to tear it badly but didn't have the heart to.

"Colton?" I called out again.

"Yes?" he stood up and quickly hid the picture under a pillow.

I noted that he wasn't ready to show me and tell me about it so I didn't push the topic. "I need your help." I told him and gestured him to follow me into my bedroom.
