The house was still, cloaked in the darkness of the night. Everything was eerily reminiscent of the night Dark died, he was almost concerned about it. Yet, it all seemed oddly comforting. It felt peaceful, calm. Pain gnawed at his heart as he stared at the stars above on the roof. He would never have Wiz find him to play or protect him from nightmares - a feat Dark could do much more literally now, but wasn't quite the same as the brother bonding from when he was alive. Emiko would never reach up and hug him and brag about her talented, handsome boy again. Kosuke and Daiki would never indulge in Dark's fascination with history again. Finally, Daisuke would likely only ever see Dark as a reminder that things had gone horribly wrong.
Being an angel was difficult, and Dark desperately wished he was still alive at this moment. He thought about how he shouldn't have fought with Krad while driving, how he should've been careful, how maybe they actually should've taken the train. In the past year, thoughts such as these came often, though it didn't make them easier.
"You can't focus on these things forever, Dark."
Dark jumped, nearly falling off the roof to look at his mentor. "How do you know what I'm thinking?"
"You think about this all the time. Anyway, I'm not here to drag you out of thinking about life, I'm here about what happened earlier today."
"... Which thing from earlier today?"
"The demon your brother sent. Things are getting more dangerous, Dark, you're going to have to be more on guard."
"How did you - my brother?" Dark wasn't sure which question was most prevalent in his mind, how his mentor could possibly know he'd fought a demon, or the idea that Krad had sent the demon.
"I didn't send you to watch your brother because of your qualifications, necessarily. There are things I need to do for the safety of the world, and I need to be able to go back and forth more freely than if I was on guard duty. Watching to make sure you do well with this is one of my many jobs. Figuring out where the demonic energy that's been trying to get into Earth is another. Krad's been busy."
Was he not dead already, Dark's face would've paled. He still felt the associated chill, though, and stared at his mentor in disbelief. "My... My brother is a demon, and he sent a demon to try to spy on Daisuke? Why?"
"He can't get out yet, probably. He wants Hiwatari, though, so I want you to try and keep an eye on that kid, too-"
"Thanks for the work," Dark muttered, receiving a glare.
"He wants to make sure you're not interfering with whatever plans he has in store. Not sure what he's planning, or how he intends on stopping anything you do, but it's certainly something to take note of."
Dark nodded solemnly, looking in the direction of Daisuke's room.
"You're fine up here, just keep your wings spread. I'll be back when I have something more to tell you." With that, the other angel disappeared, leaving Dark to his thoughts again.
Dark sighed tiredly, expanding his wings gently. The night air was surprisingly cool against his inner wings, which had been kept warm against his body. Well, warm for him. He was still cold to the touch, after all.
"Guard duty never ends," he muttered, looking to the moon wistfully.
