It's been almost a week since I met Ashton, Calum, and Luke. We all hung out again a few times after that night and Luke was just the same as he was. He kept to himself and still didn't really talk to me. I did try to start a conversation a few times but it always ended with Luke saying something rude or just not responding at all. I don't think anyone has any idea how much Luke frustrates me with his bitter attitude towards me.
I decided to take a walk around my grandma's neighborhood to just get some fresh air and to think a little bit. I also wanted to take advantage of the nice weather that Australia has. My thoughts mostly consisted of Luke during this walk I was trying to use to clear my head. Part of me wants to try so hard to figure him out but the other part wants nothing to do with him. I don't think I want to waste my time or energy on him either.
I finish my walk and go back to my grandma's house which smells like all kinds of food when I walk through the door. My mouth begins to water as I find my way to the kitchen. My grandma is stirring something in a pot on the stove when I walk in. I notice all the ingredients spread out on the counters also. My grandma doesn't usually cook this much on a normal day so this means something special is happening tonight.
"Bree, come here and taste this sauce for me." My grandma says waving me over.
I walk over to the stove and she scoops a little bit of the sauce on her spoon. I blow on it before tasting it and it's actually really good. It's way better than anything you would get out of a can at the grocery store. My grandma's cooking never fails to amaze me.
"What do you think? I'm trying something new." My grandma smiles and waits for my opinion on it.
"It's good, I like it." My grandma's smile widens at my response. "What's the special occasion?" I ask, leaning against the counter and crossing my arms.
"Good! I'm glad you like it." She stirs the sauce a few more times before putting a lid on the pot. "I invited some friends over for dinner tonight."
"The Cliffords?" I ask. Michael's family is really the only family my grandma likes to invite over for dinner so I wouldn't be surprised if they were coming.
She shakes her head, "No, the Hemmings family. I met them a few weeks before you got here through your friend, Michael's, mother."
The Hemmings family? Where have I heard that last name before? I try to think about where I've heard it before but nothing comes to mind. I look at my grandma and wait for her to clarify exactly who the Hemmings family is.
"You were hanging out with her son a few days ago. I think his name is Luke." She continues and my jaw drops. Now I'm going to be forced to be with Luke tonight. This is something I'm really not looking forward to. Spending dinner with someone who can't stand me is going to drive me crazy. Having to deal with Luke's bitter attitude isn't something I was planning on doing with the rest of my evening.
"Are you alright, honey?" My grandma asks since I haven't responded.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I lie. "When will they be over?"
I don't need to share Luke's hatred for me because, knowing my grandma, she'll bring it up at dinner tonight and we'll both be put in an awkward situation. This would probably just make Luke not like me even more. For now, I'll just keep Luke's feelings towards me to myself.
She looks at the clock on the stove, "They should be here in around an hour or two."
"Alright." I nod, relieved I have some time before I have to see Luke. Maybe he won't show up if he realizes he's attending dinner at my grandma's house. I think I'll be able to survive this dinner if that's the case.
