John asked Philip if he wanted any food, he was going to run down to the cafeteria before heading back to the room to check on Maria again. Philip shook his head 'No,' but John wanted to get him something anyways. He decided to just get a cookie or something for him, as a small surprise.
John headed down to the cafeteria, picked up a cookie for Philip, and got a bag of chips for himself, then headed back up to their floor-lounge. He handed Philip the cookie, even though Philip refused to take it, and started walking over to the room.
When John was just outside the room, he heard light crying coming from inside, and a small buzzing-type sound. He quickly ran in and saw the heart-monitor flat-lining.
"No! No! Th-this isn't happ-happening! No! Tell me this is a nightmare! Mom!?!? Please!?!?"
James looked at him and whispered, "I-I'm sorry John... They tried... They did..."
John continued staring at the monitor in shock, "No, there has to be a way! SOMEONE HELP!!!"
Anyone in range ignored him, knowing they already tried and failed.
John started running up and down the hall, screaming and crying, until Alex finally stepped in front of him. He ran into Alex, not seeing him. Alex held him and asked what was going on. John starting crying into Alex and answered, through tears, "My- my.. m-mom..." He started crying harder.
Alex brought John back to the room Maria was in. There were doctors everywhere, moving tubes and equipment around.
"W-what's going o-on?" John asked, still crying.
One of the doctors answered, "She didn't make it, so we're getting everything finalized and sending her off."
"No. NO! YOU CAN'T DO THIS! PLEASE DON'T!" John tried pushing the doctor out of the room to stop him, but James grabbed John and pulled him outside instead.
"THEY CAN'T DO THIS! SHE CAN MAKE IT! I'LL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES! PLEASE!!!" He started crying harder. Both James and Alex started hugging him, hoping he would calm down and accept it.
John tried breaking free, but couldn't, and just stayed still and let it happen. Philip had came to see what was going on after hearing all the noise. He saw John and didn't want to know what happened, then walked into the room. He saw Maria laying there, almost lifeless, and thought, 'Wait... why are they doing this if she's alive?' He walked up to one of the doctors and told him.
The doctor responded, "And what makes you think she's alive? She was clearly dead earlier..."
"I saw her hand move..."
"Brain dead movement... Move along."
"No. Give her a few more minutes. Please."
"Why? Do you even know anything about what's happening?"
"Actually yes, I'm taking online pre-med classes. Please, just a few minutes. If she's still 'dead,' do whatever you want."
"Okay fine, let's give the kid what he wants."
---------------------------------------
A few minutes pass and Maria is still slightly moving. John started to get confused why they hadn't taken her yet.
One of the doctors walked up to another and whispered, "I think the kid is right, she might be alive... Let's give her just the rest of today."
"You're right, the movements would've stopped by now. Okay, what do we tell them?"
"Well her kid wanted us to keep trying right? Tell him that we will and that she'll stay one more night. It works out for everyone's wants."
They left the room and told John, Alex, Philip, and James to follow them. They led them down a few rooms and told them what they were planning on doing, while some other doctors and nurses help set Maria back up for the 'final day.'
By the time everything was explained, Philip pulled the doctor off to the side and whispered, "Told ya so," before heading back to the room to join everyone else.
A few hours passed of them sitting around before the heart-monitor started making weird sounds.
"What's that sound? What's it doing?" John asked, looking around, confused.
There were no doctors in the room, but Philip knew what was happening. "I think someoneeeee might be aliveeeee."
The monitor started making louder noises before going back to normal beeeep beeeep beeep beeep beeep.
Another few moments passed before James saw Maria open her eyes.
"YES! Maria! Oh my gosh!"
Maria looked at him with a fake-confused face, "Who are you?"
"Uhhh...."
"Nah I'm just messing around! Hey everyone! Wow!"
John ran over and hugged her tightly, "I missed you!"
She gasped for air, "Okay, okay, I believe you, can I breath now?" Maria laughed it off.
"Oh right, yeah!" He backed away and looked over at James, who was smiling for the first time John could remember.
