CHAPTER 13 |

Back at SHIELD

Steve stepped into Bucky's cell and knocked on the door frame, stirring him from his thoughts. Bucky looked up attentively, probably hoping for some news about Y/N's whereabouts or what he could do to help.

Steve motioned for Bucky to come as he walked out of the open cell, which meant Bucky could finally get out.

He grabbed his belongings and followed Steve out of the building and to a car that drove them to Stark Tower. "This is where you'll be staying" Steve told a mesmerized Bucky as he stepped into the huge high rise "and it's also the main hub for the Avengers, and where we'll be spending our time searching for Y/N"

Steve led Bucky to one of the residential floors and showed him to his room. "It's not very decorated, but it's better than a cell I trust." He told Bucky. He nodded gratefully. "Thank you Steve."

"Thank Tony." He replied "Also, we'll be debriefing on the Y/N mission tomorrow morning, apparently new and very important information has surfaced."

"Steve" Bucky called just before Steve walked out the door. "Can I uh....talk to you about something." Steve nodded and stepped back into the room.

"You know you and Peggy?" Steve nodded, confused. "You remember how you felt? When you were around her."

Steve half-smiled "Yeah, like we were the only two people in the room." He gave Bucky a questionable glance, which prompted him to explain himself.

"Well, that's how I feel when I'm with Y/N. Granted 99% of the time we were the only two people in the room." He paused "But when I was with her I wasn't part of HYDRA, I wasn't the Winter Soldier, I was me. I was James Buchanan Barnes, I was who I used to be. At least before -" he sighed and looked down at his arm, then back at Steve. "I think maybe I have those same feelings for Y/N..." he concluded

"You're saying you love her?" Steve asked.

"I mean, I don't know if I'd say love." Bucky responded, almost struggling for words. "I-I just care about her...a lot. She saved my life Steve." Steve sighed and mumbled under his breath "Yeah, that makes two of us."

"What?" Bucky asked, not hearing Steve's comment. "Nothing" Steve replied plainly before approaching Bucky and hugging him. "I'm glad my best friend is back." He let Bucky go and smiled before making his way out the room.

The next day

"Hello, team." Fury addressed the room of superheroes and Bucky as he walked inside. "As many of you may have heard, a voice message was intercepted from agent Y/L/N's watch." Everyone in the room sat up and payed more attention to what Fury was saying. He played the voice recording, which was hard for everyone to hear. You could hear the pain in her voice.

"So what now?" Bruce asked "Do we go out and get her?" Fury sighed as the group looked at his expectantly "This is a very personal mission, I'd rather none of you go out there. I will send our best soldiers."

"Fury, it's Y/N....." Steve protested. The team argued over whether it was safe to go out there. "Send me" Bucky said suddenly. This was the first time he'd spoken the entire meeting

"If anyone knows HYDRA, it's me." He admitted begrudgingly. "And if Y/N is anything like I was, you don't want to be around her. She will kill you."

"What makes you so sure she won't kill you?" Natasha asked Bucky.

"Nothing." He responded, leaving her surprised "But I'm not an Avenger, I'm not really...anything." He stated. The room feel silent until Fury spoke up again.

"Fine, Barnes you can go, but you're still taking my men with you." He nodded, and soon the meeting was adjourned.
