You did come back the next day. You worked graveyards everyday at this post, and everyone in the perimeter was asleep except for you and Bucky. You knocked on his door this time, he wasn't asleep yet so you figured you didn't have to sneak in. He opened the door and sat back down on the bed.
You pulled out a folder that you'd concealed in your vest and handed it to him. It was his case file, the only file you'd taken with you on the mission.
He read off the title "James Buchanan Barnes: Winter Soldier," His jaw clenched "What is this?"
You opened it for him to reveal pictures after pictures and pages after pages summarizing his entire life. "It's you, or rather who you were. Everything on the life of James Buchanan Barnes."
He sorted through the pages rapidly, stopping at a few points to read more.
You watched him "Do you remember anything from your past?" you asked.
He looked up and met your eyes "Very little, it hurts if I do. Sometimes I remember things in my-"
"-nightmares." you finished. He nodded and continued looking through the file. "How did you get this?"
"Does it matter?" He eyed you suspiciously then shrugged it off.
"I guess not.."
It took him about 45 minutes to look through his entire file. the whole time you sat there and watched him. His cuts and bruises had started to fade and you could see his real face. He was a beautiful man, his face was chiseled and worn, but there was a softness in his eyes. You could see yourself falling for him.
When he was done, he gave you the folder and stared at you. Tears brimmed his eyes and threatened to spill. "I was a man." he said, awestruck.
"You are a man." you replied.
"I'm a monster." His expression went solemn and a tear ran down his face. You wiped it and turned his chin to face you "You are a man."
He nodded and rested his hand in your lap "Thank you-"
"Y/N" you told him.
"Thank you Y/N."
"You're welcome Bucky."
You exited the room and stood guard in front of the door, looking in occasionally and smiling at him. Maybe you could change this man
