We have to walk to the store, due to the fact that...
1.) I don't have a car.
2.) I don't have my drivers license.
3.) I like walking.
So there you have it. Cole and I are now striding along the sidewalk as cars pass us at a low speed. I still receive confused and wondering looks from those around us, but I don't care. Cole has his arm draped around my shoulder as I'm flush against his side.
Luckily, everything in this small town is close, so the grocery store isn't that far away from my house. My mother and I always used to walk to this store, even though we had a car. This small town holds so many memories, even though I was only here for a short amount of time.
Up ahead, the grocery store can be seen. The parking lot is barely full, only seven vehicles are parked in the painted spots, but there's more people going in and out of the store that just walked. The automatic doors open as Cole and I approach, revealing the inside.
From the left side to the right, there's low, four shelf racks that have all sorts of everyday needs. Over to the far right, is all the refrigerated things that one would need. The store isn't large, but it certainly isn't small, it's about in the middle.
Different local shoppers roam the different aisles, going up and down, searching for what they need. Some have shopping lists in hand, and that reminds me that I brought one for us. I dig my hand into my pocket and grab a sloppily folded piece of paper and flatten it out to reveal my handwriting in a black ink.
"What's first?" Cole asks, his arm never leaving my shoulder. I peer down at the list, seeing what's number one.
"Cereal," I say, averting my gaze to meet his.
Cole nods and I lead the way back to the snack area, where I remembered it to be when I used to come here. To my surprise, it's in the same spot so I won't have to ask anyone for help.
"I'll be right back," Cole states, and disappears around one of the aisles. He comes back minutes later with a thick plastic green shopping basket.
"Thanks."
"Yup!" Cole says, popping the 'p' in an over dramatic voice that just makes me laugh under my breath. I place two boxes of Fiber One into the basket, when I was younger, I remember it to be my favorite. But as soon as I put into the basket, Cole takes one of the boxes out, puts it back on the shelf and grabs a different kind: Frosted Flakes.
"Seriously?" I playfully roll my eyes.
"What? You got your favorite cereal," Cole protests.
"I'm just kidding. Come on, I don't want to be here until midnight."
"Jeez, someone's in a mood," he jokes.
"Shut up and get moving!" I laugh and Cole just chuckles, grabbing the list from the bottom of the basket and searching for the next thing.
***
"What's next?""Milk."
We've been here for what feels like years, though it was probably only thirty minutes and we're not even half way through the list yet, and it's not because we couldn't find the stuff, it's because Cole was being annoying. Whatever I'd put in the basket, he'd take out and put something else in, and when I say it was annoying, I mean VERY annoying. Every time I'd give him a death glare for doing it, he'd flash me an innocent smile.
we stride over to the refrigerated section where the milk is, and I open the door and grab a gallon of organic milk and place it in the basket.
But I freeze when I see something, well someone I rather not want to see. And he's standing in one of the aisles. I drop the milk before it makes it to the basket and run.
I run to the door and out into the open parking lot, the sun beating down on my back.
It can't be him.
It can't.
