"She just shuts her ears."

"It's all the same," I breathe, overwhelmed with excitement as it washes over my emotions like a wave. A single tear of joy escapes my eye, rolling down my cheek.
"It's all the same," I repeat, Cole comes up the porch step and takes me into his arms, giving me a reassuring squeeze. Just then, we hear someone shout at us. I pull away from Cole immediately, startled. My eyes search for where the yelling came from, and they land on a short woman standing on her porch, staring at us with wide eyed.
Her black rimmed glasses sit on the bridge of her nose, falling down the slightest inch, and her pencil skirt is ironed to perfection.
"What are you doing! How dare you step foot on that property!" She shouts at us, but there's something about her voice that rings a bell. I step closer to the porch fence, and peer up at the woman, the name finally surfacing as shock overtakes me.
"Ms. Spencer?" I ask, completely overjoyed to see a familiar face. Ms. Spencer was and still is my neighbor, our relationship was really close back then, we'd always bake and hang out with one another. She'd always say that I'm like the daughter she never had. We'd do a lot of things together, like go shopping, have dinner. She was like my second mom, because my mother always had to work late. All the memories come raiding into my mind once her name leaves my mouth.
The panicked look on her face soon disappears when she finally takes in my features, her face flashing with realization.
"Adeline? Adeline Callahan?" She states, heavy question laced in her voice. I nod my head, a weak smile tugging at my lips as we gaze at one another. She comes off her porch, closer to Cole and I, she strides up the porch steps and scrutinizes my face up close. She reluctantly comes up to me, her emerald green eyes flash with a hint of happiness.
She cups my face with her cold hands, a sigh of release escaping her mouth as she quickly takes me in her arms, embracing me tightly. I feel a wet spot start to form on my shoulder from her. She pulls away a minute later and breaths.
"Honey, I-I thought you were dead!" She exclaims.
I shake my head, "no, no I'm here, I'm alive," I say, gazing up at her, her heels giving her a two inch advantage over me. Her sun kissed blonde hair is up in a tight, spotless bun.
She takes hold of both of my hands, "what happened to you? What is this scar from? I don't remember you having it when you were younger!" She shoots a whole bunch of questions at me, not taking breaths in between as her face turns bright red from it.
"Ms. Spencer, take a breath...it's a long story I'd rather not explain right now," I say, clamping my hands on her arms in an attempt to calm her down.
"I-I'm sorry, but I've just missed you so much darling," she wraps her arms around me once again, pulling me close.
"I've missed you too," I whisper, so glad that she's here now.
Once again she pulls away and trains her attention on Cole, who's standing off to the side behind her.
"And who's this handsome fella?" She asks, a small smile taking over her defined features; it's a smile that reaches up to her eyes, causing them to glint under the dark, covered porch.
"I'm Cole Richardson, it's very nice to meet you Ms. Spencer," Cole introduces, holding his hand out for her to shake and she does.
"Nice to meet you too!" She beams.
She turns back around to me, and whispers into my ear quietly so only I can hear.
"He's a keeper," she says, the smile never flattering from her lips, what she says just makes me giggle, my cheeks heating up a bit.
"Come, let's have some lunch!" Ms. Spencer says, motioning for us to follow her.
It just feels so good to be back home.
