"He's in love with the statue in a marble block."
The sound of the rails screeching wakes me up instantly, my hear beat picking up from the sudden noise and jostling. I sit up, my greasy hair flowing like a cascade down my back, some getting in my eyes, blocking my view of the outermost space. The scenery whizzes by in a flash, a mix of extravagant color all around. Small oak trees line the tracks, spread apart by a few feet. Wild dandelions and lilacs sprout all over as the wind weaves through the wild grass.
There's only one word I can think of to describe this: beautiful. I haven't seen such a view ever since I was little, before I was shut out of the world, before The Owners took me in as their own slave and punch bag. Before I turned into this weak, sickly pale being I am today.
The high pitched whistle sounds again, my ears ringing. I lay back down, turning on my side to stare out. The sliding doors on each side of the train are still open, though I don't know why. Inside - now that there's natural light - is stacks of wooden crates and boxes full of unknown contents. Some have labels, while others have address stickers informing where it must be transported to.
I stand up off the wooden beams of the train and move towards the back of the car, towards the neatly stacked crates. I scrutinize them, and read all the labels that say one place only. Mexico. Curious, I open up a crate and stare down inside. Fresh fruits and vegetables are all packaged and neatly placed inside, just waiting to be eaten.
I sit back down, my legs weak and shaking. I carefully lean my back on the crates, my legs straight out in front of me. I stare in front of me, not blinking. My eyes dilate when I see something move, something deep in the boxes on the other side. My heart beat begins increasing as I stare intensely at the opposite side of the train, but nothing moves, nothing makes a sound, nothing.
I'm paranoid, I'm paranoid.
I rub my eyes and stare out again, nothing's changed. I inhale and exhale silently, the sudden scare still leaving me dazed in my trance. I lie my head back again, trying to clear my bustling mind. The breeze waves over my ears and weaves through my hair.
I shut my heavy eyes, it seems that all my body can do is rest, as if it's shutting down. I sling my backpack over my lap, the contents slamming on my femur painfully. Unzipping the bag, I frantically dig through the different food items, rapidly taking out a bottled water. I unscrew the cap and down the liquid, making my throat moist, no longer dry.
I let out a sigh of relief, and slump over, taking in sharp breaths, and within seconds, my eyes droop and I'm gone.
