Why did I say that? What possesed me to leave my friends? I guess I'll never know.

Something about that Levi's eyes drew me in and kept me focused on the goal I so desperatley wanted.

Freedom

If I wanted freedom more than anything else in this world, and the only way we can get closer to that goal is to fight for it. That's what I think anyway.

And if my sister gets protection then that's a bonus.

But how do I tell them I'm leaving.

"We'll give you some time to say your goodbyes".

As I entered the dusty, old canteen, all heads turned to face me.

"Took you long enough", Mika grabs me by the sleeve and drags me fiercly to the table. She tries to pull me down in the seat, but with all my strength, I'm able to restrict her from doing so. 'Please stop, Mika, this is hard enough already' I thought.

"(Y/n), what's wrong? Are you not hungry?", Armin looks up at me with a concerned expression, "If you aren't hungry maybe you should go lie down." 'Stop it Armin, please, I'm begging you.'

I'm on the verge of tears now, and the warmth now creeping around my shoulders doesn't help that. "(Y/n)," his voice calls out to me. "What's the matter, we can help you, please."

My regret get the better of me and rivers of tears pour onto the floor where I stand.

"NO YOU CAN'T!", I shout without control.

Everyone stops what they are doing to face my emotional state. 'Stop crying, idiot', I keep telling myself this hoping I will obey.

"You can't... help me... with this one", I choke out, my breathing slowly becoming stable. "I... You ... won't be with me to help me". I turn and look deeply into Eren's eyes, pulling his arms off me. "I'm leaving, to join the survey corps."

Silence filled the room. My friends heartbroken faces stain my mind as I inspect each and every one. Then, three bodies encase me in their body heat.

"Don't worry, we understand", Armin says.

"We can't be with you forever", Mika joins.

"But promise us one thing", Eren finishes," Come back to us one day, okay? We decided we would start this together, so we still need to finish this together."

I show them a genuine smile in return. I'm lucky, most people would be angry at their friend leaving them, even after making a promise to stay together forever. But they were okay with it.

I told myself that day that I had to come back. If anything happened I needed to be there to protect them, I can't lose friends like these. Ever.

"I promise".
