What I see

In my dreams, I see a magical place. A place I've never been and have never seen. But I have read about it before.

People used to call it a 'beach'.

It has golden sand that glistens in the radiating glow of the sun. Hidden under the sand are thousands of 'shells', delicate, palm sized constructions that house tiny creatures.

Connected to the sand in the 'ocean'. An infinate source of salt water that stretches out into the sunset. A crystal blue surface that humans used to sail on.

There is a gentle breeze blowing through my hair. The sand seeps through the gaps of my toes.

Without realising it, I walk towards the sea. With each step the wind settles. I walk, and continue walking until the water comes up to my neck. Then I let myself dive under.

Under the water is a paradise of sea creatures and plants that thrive without sunlight. And in the middle of a circle of rocks is an old, wooden door.

I swim towards the door, past the tiny creature nibbling at my toes and the leaves brushing past my legs.

I reach out to the doorknob and turn it, then push it open-

Shiganshina District, South Side of Wall Rose, Year 845.

I reach the old, wooden door and turn the silver doorknob. With my mother and 5 year old sister, Kyo in tow, I enter the old house.

"Good Morning Mr and Mrs Jaeger", I call out into the sunlight kitchen.

A beautiful woman with long black hair turns to greet us.
"Well if it isn't the (L/n)'s, are you all ready to start lunch?". She maintains a smile throughout her sentence as she takes the food from my mother.

"Yes Mrs Jaeger, do you need any help preparing?". I love cooking, it's very calming and always great to know people enjoy what you make. I take a place at the kitchen counter and start to peel some potatoes.

Kyo sits next to Dr Jaeger and starts to question him about being a doctor. She looks up to him because he gets to help a lot of people.

My mother talks to Mrs Jaeger by the sink about food prices and how us kids are doing lately.

I look out the window to the old town we live in. People in the streets chatting with vendors, probably trying to get a deal on food. Kids about my age playing tag in between big crowds.
And the wall. The wall that stands proud at 50 metres, protecting us from the titans that reside in the outside world. I can't help but imagine just how many of them are scratching at its surface, trying to get in.

But there is one thing that catches my eye over everything else.
A big, dark green flag flying over the rooftops. A big blue and white symbol is embellished on its fabric.

The Wings of Freedom.

The mark of the Survey Corps. Soldiers who venture beyond our walls to try and reclaim our land from the titans. They take the fight to those monsters in their own territory just to give us a small chance at freedom.
I will join them one day, and I will leave this cage that we call home. I will stand by the ocean, me and my friends, all together.

The opening of the front door dragged me out of my thoughts.
"We're back", a boy called out. Eren Jaeger, one of my best friends. A loud, obnoxious, brown haired boy with the most amazing emerald green eyes. We have been friends most our lives as our families would often get together like they are now.

Following him was his adoptive sister, and another of my best friends, Mikasa Ackerman. She was probably the last Asian left in the entire human population. She had long black hair to match her deep dark grey eyes. She wore a red scarf that I gave her after her parents had died. It was a rather horrifying story of how she came to live with the Jaegers. But it involved me and Eren... never mind.

I abandon my potato and run up to hug the two of them.
"Hey (Y/n), yours and mom's cooking smells great, I can't wait to eat it," Eren says to me with a genuine smile.
"Thanks for helping Mrs Jaeger, I'm sure it'll be delicious", Mikasa says.
