The Letter That Shouldn't Have Came

Our base is set up for the night. It's only a few large tents and tables, but it does its job. I walk through our temporary settlement and analyse the tiny, beautiful details. The light of the small campfires and torches leaves a soft edge to the area. Looking up to a tree, I see two squirrels climbing up its trunk, then resting on a branch, cuddled up together. In the growing dark sky, I see two birds, flying close to eachother, occasionally switching places. As I look around me, I see many of my comrades, other soldiers, paired off, having their own small conversations, smiling in eachother's company. It's now that I realise how lonely I am. I'm just replacing the emptiness in my heart that was left by leaving, with the adrenaline of fighting and the distant goal of freedom.

I think back to home, back to 5 years ago, having dinner with the Jaeger's, scrounging food with Kyo, beating up bullies for Armin, and sitting with mom watching the sunset from our roof. I miss those days, when it didn't matter what was outside the walls, because we all thought we were safe. Before the Colossal Titan showed up. Before the Armoured Titan broke through wall Maria. Is it so bad to want to go back?

I'm snapped out of my thoughts by someone's fingers clicking in my face. Once again, that cold glare bore through me. 'Can't Levi greet me some other way?'.

"(L/n), stop day dreaming, we're going to have dinner with the squad."

I sighed at y ignorance to my surroundings, then put on my cockiest smirk to back chat this guy. "Sorry, Ackerman, but you have it all wrong, how could I possibly day dream when it has just turned night?".

His only response is an expressionless stare. With that, I hang my head and make my way into the tent my squad is staying in. I take my seat at the bottom end of the table, near Eld and Gunther, while Levi takes his seat at the top next to Oluo and Petra. We talk for a while about strategy, while eating the bland field rations handed to us before hand. Then Petra turn to me with a suggestive smile.

"So (Y/n), any boys back in your cadet group that you have a thiiiiing for?"

"Petra that's completely unproffesional", Eld begins, " But I have to say I am curious, tell us". Gunther and Oluo give slight nods.

It's something I haven't thought much about in detail. I think back to the boys in my training group. There was Connie, the hyper guy that always hung around Sasha, but I always pictured him ending up with her. Reiner, I really looked up to him but ... nope. Bertholt, did he even talk? Jean... He was nice, but arrogant, although he hated Eren they were a lot alike. Armin? I've been friends with him a while, but I saw him more as a brother than ... well that way. Then there's Eren. Did I ever have feelings for him? Most of me says no but there's a small part of me that's saying...

I happen to catch Levi's glare while in thought, and immediatley look down at the wooden table.

"No". They all seem rather dissapointed at my answer, they all let it go but once again Petra breaks the silence.

"How about family? Any of them in there?"

"Yes actually my cousin, Marco Bodt."

Levi nods and opens the curtain of the tent behind him, revealing a rather petrified messenger.

"There's no need to be frightened to send a message, we don't bite all the time", Levi told him. The messenger fumbled with the parchment in his hand and stuttered as he spoke.

"S-Sorry Captain L-Levi. U-u-uh Leiutenant (L-L/n)! I have a m-message from your father".

The whole world stopped around me, all eyes were on the messenger so no one sees me practically freaking out except Levi. I look him dead in the eye and my voice wavers as I say;

"My Father is dead."

Shock filled the tent as the laid back expressions turned to slight fear while they turned to face me. The messenger completes his duty and hand me the letter. I'm scared to open it, but I have no choice.

I hesitantly look over its contents.

"Dear (Y/n),

I'm sure you're surprised, it's not everyday your deceased father sends you a letter. But I can assure you, I am very much alive.

Remember good old Dr Jeager? I met up with him just last week. I imagine your expression now greatly ressembles his own. I'm sure by now you have begun to either grow in fear or anger. Either way, you must pay close attention to what I am about to tell you.

Be prepared for the next few years, things are about to get crazy. Chaos will reign tomorrow. But don't worry.

Your Father will come and get you in time.

We will see if you survive to see your 'freedom',

Oh, and don't worry about Kyo. That poor excuse for a daughter will be dealt with how I see fit.

Don't try and escape your fate, (Y/n),

-Dad"

I throw the letter as far as I can, the fear and tears in my eyes growing.

"I need to get to Trost."
