.Carl.
The next few weeks were a blur. I started at the police academy, and the training was kind of kicking my ass. On top of that, I was still taking shifts in the evenings at my security job to make extra money. I was exhausted most nights, but I really needed Layla to know I was serious about the three of us.
She was busy with school and midterms, and her nose was almost always in a book when I came home at night. Almost as soon as we saw each other, we would drop everything and start making out, which always led to more. It made all the long, grueling days well worth it.
I got home one night in late October, and she had fallen asleep with a textbook on her lap while she sat slumped over on the couch.
I smiled at her as I went to move the book so I could make her more comfortable. I lifted the textbook and a slightly smaller book fell out of it and onto the floor.
"Shit," I whispered, looking to see if I'd woken her. Luckily, her eyes were still shut and her chest still rose and fell in slow, even breaths. Poor thing; she must have been wiped.
I knelt down to pick the other book up. As I turned it over in my hands, I read the title: What to Expect When You're Expecting. She had dog-eared a page a little over halfway through.
My eyes widened and a grin formed on my face as I looked up at her. She'd secretly been reading this book; she couldn't have just read all this today. Not to mention how long it probably took her to psych herself up enough to go and buy it. She's been preparing for this, I realized. I set the book down gently on top of the others she had strewn about the coffee table.
I stood up and stared at her with so much love and admiration. I bent down to pick her up so I could carry her to bed. Tomorrow was a big day; tomorrow was ultrasound day.
.....
.Layla.
I woke up in our bed the next morning without realizing I had been moved there. The last thing I remembered was reading...
Shit! The book!
I looked over and saw Carl sleeping next to me.
Oh my god; I hope he hadn't seen the book hidden in my physics textbook. I had managed to hide it from him for several days, and then I fell asleep like an idiot. Damn it. Maybe he hadn't noticed it.
He began to stir and opened his eyes a bit to smile at me. He reached his hand out to rub the tiny bump forming on my stomach.
Shit. He'd noticed.
"We get to see you today," he mumbled to my tummy as he leaned over and kissed it.
I thought my ovaries would burst. Fuck, Carl. Why are you so damn cute?
I kissed him and got up to get ready for our appointment. I walked out to the living room and my fears were confirmed when I saw my baby book on top of all the other ones. It was so deliberately placed, I knew he'd done it. And now he knew I'd been reading it.
"Everything okay?" he asked.
Startled, I whirled around to face him. He was leaning on the doorframe to the bedroom and grinning at me.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine," I sighed, walking into the bathroom to take a shower.
I stared down at my belly as I stood under the water, running my hands over it. It was starting to look a little like I was pregnant. I couldn't wear tight shirts anymore unless I wanted questions. I was caught up in my thoughts when the shower curtain was suddenly pulled aside and I jumped, my hands frozen.
