Chapter II
Nevada
Maddie was lying on the couch in Tanner's living room, Lucas sprawled out on the armchair nearby. I sat on the coffee table next to them, keeping watch and praying that they would wake up when I snapped my fingers.
Snap. Nothing. God is good.
The twitching had stopped around an hour earlier, and their breathing had steadied itself considerably. I could only hope it was a good sign.
It was nearly midnight, and nobody expected to be able to sleep through the night. Phil walked into the living room and addressed me, "Hey. How you feeling?"
I shrugged, "Better than them, I'm guessing."
Just as I said it, Maddie's chest lurched up and her breathing became shallow and raspy. I groaned, "I really don't need this right now." Just as I was ready to start giving her chest compressions, she fell back into the couch, breathing completely normal, as if nothing had happened.
Phil frowned, "Well that was strange."
I agreed, "Quite."
"I'll stay here if you want." He said, "I don't mind."
"No!" I replied a little too quickly, "It's fine. Not like I'm gonna get any sleep anyways."
"Well," He responded, "Jordan wants to talk to you about something of 'utmost importance', so I've got this. Plus, believe it or not, I'm CPR certified."
I laughed, "Seriously?"
He shrugged, "Okay, maybe not 'certified'. But I've seen enough crime and doctor shows to know how to do chest compressions."
I smiled, "That's completely reassuring."

Jordan sat alone in the garage behind Tanner's moped, whittling a branch from one of the trees outside with a Swiss Army knife that she'd probably stolen from Ali. When she heard my footsteps, she looked up and smiled, "Hey."
I gave a wave, "I heard you had something important to talk about."
She nodded and patted the cushion next to her. I sat down, and she began, "So I may or may not have extremely important info that may or may not be imperative to our success and/or failure."
I laughed, "What've you been reading, a dictionary?"
She rolled her eyes, "Thesaurus. Obviously. The point is, I'm not positive I'm right about this, so until I can prove it..."
"You don't want me to tell anybody." I finished, and she nodded. "So what's this imperative news you speak of?"
She looked towards the door, as if checking that we were truly alone, then turned back towards me, "I think I might know who the traitor is."
I stared, "Really? Who?"
She shrugged, "I didn't see it for myself. It was Nudge, actually. Point is, right after we got Maddie back, she heard a suspicious phone call."
"And who was this phone call made by?"
She looked at me with a worried expression, "Nathan."
I let out a quiet gasp, "Nathan? You really think Nathan might have betrayed us."
"From what I heard of the conversation, that's what it sounded like."
I frowned, "But how? Why?"
"I don't know." She answered, "But I intend to find out."
