Chapter XIV
Maddie
"What am I supposed to do...?" I asked worriedly. I could hear the slight quiver in my voice and scolded myself. Don't worry about later. She can wait.
"Uh..." Nevada replied, "If you don't know, how should I know?"
"We need to filter them out." Max decided, "Observe each of them and figure out which one is different."
"There are hundreds of them." Nevada pointed out glumly, "Looking for a difference is like looking for the Waldo with dark brown shoes in a sea of Waldos in black shoes. Where the shoes are completely blocked by the bodies of other Waldos. In a pitch black room. And-"
"That's enough. Nice simile." I interrupted.
"Thank you. I try."
"We use common sense." Max explained, oblivious to Nevada's really long simile, "Figure out location, then scout from there."
Nevada sighed, "Well in that case, he'd go wherever he's the safest. Surrounded by protection." She pointed down at the battlefield, "That's the biggest cluster of them. He's gotta be somewhere in there."
"See." Max said matter-of-factly, "Progress. Now we just gotta find the difference."
"In the sea of clustered up Waldos." Nevada muttered.
I armed my bow with one of the arrows from my quiver, "I got it."
Max stared at me, "You do?"
"We've only got one shot." Nevada said, "If you're wrong, they're all gonna scatter and we're gonna be screwed."
"I'm positive." I explained, "Clones are perfect, completely identical, and Jeb would create them for what he needed, soldiers essentially. They all know how to march on step, except for that one there in the middle. That's him. He's a scientist. He has no clue how to drill, proven by the fact that he's the only one on the right when it should be left."
Nevada frowned, considering my theory, "Yeah, I don't have anything better."
Max nodded, "Same. Shoot the bastard."
I smiled, relishing the thought, "Aye ma'am."
I pulled back the string, took a deep breath, and fired. The arrow made a loud swoosh as it soared through the air and then a thunk as it hit Jeb in the center of his chest. He doubled over, his face contorting in pain, then he lay still.
That's when the interesting part happened. All the clones fell face first to the ground. Even from that distance, I could tell they were all dead.
Nevada's eyes widened, "Well that's a surprise."
With my awakened hearing, I heard the crack of a branch against stone. I turned towards the sound, "Ali." Then I jumped off the branch and flew.
