Chapter VIII
Gary
I woke up in complete darkness. I couldn't see a thing, even when I waved my hand directly in front of my face. The only sounds were those of my breath.
I tried to move, to stand and find out where I was, but my feet were shackled to the wall. The clank of the metal against stone was a new refreshing sound, but it still scared the hell out of me.
I heard another sound; the sound of another person nearby, breathing heavily as if having just woken up. "Hello?" I whispered hopefully.
"Gary?" I heard.
"Ellen?" I answered, "That you?"
"Yeah." I heard her struggle against the shackles, then groan, "Where are we?"
"I don't know." I replied, then frowned, "What's the last thing you remember?"
"Um..." She thought, "School. I think Ms. Cochabamba's class. Third block. Couple of weeks before break maybe."
"Yeah. Me too."
We heard the sound of footsteps nearby, and soon a large, metal door was swung open, flooding light into the room. When I could finally see again, I saw the figure of a woman blocking the light in the doorway.
She smirked, "Ah good. You're up."
I frowned, "Did you drug us?"
She frowned back, as if deeply considering the question, "You could say that. I see it as more of an enlightenment."
"What do you want with us?" Ellen said bluntly.
The woman smiled, "You are going to help us take over the world."
I rolled my eyes, "I'm a thirteen year old. I think the most I can do is smash a couple computers before the cops shoot me."
She laughed, "You are much more powerful than you know. More powerful than me, in all honesty. Which is saying something."
"What makes you think we'll help you?" I asked.
"You don't have a choice." She answered mysteriously, "You won't be awake, if it makes you feel any better. You'll be getting rid of our enemies while enjoying a nice coma. You won't even remember you did it."
"How can you think you're capable of all of this." Ellen questioned, "How can one woman just sweep in and take over the world with the help of two comatose teenagers."
The woman sighed and reached into her cloak, pulling a small picture out and throwing it to the floor in front of us, "Do you recognize her?"
I looked at the picture and nodded, "Maddie."
She nodded at my answer, "Yes. Madison Jack." She knelt down next to us, a smirk growing on her face, "She got in our way. I killed her."
Ellen gasped, "She's... dead? No no no, she can't be dead."
"Well, dead is a relative term." The woman replied mystically, "But that's besides the point. She's as good as dead." With a flick of her hand, the picture burst into flames, "And I'm going to make sure it stays that way."
The woman stood and walked out, the heels of her boots clanking loudly against the stone floor. I tried for one final act of bravery, cliché as it was, "You'll never get away with this."
She turned back and smiled at me, "Oh, Gary. We already have."
The metal door slammed shut, leaving me alone with Ellen and Maddie's burning picture, and I couldn't help but feel that picture had sealed our fates as the ashes dimmed, and we were plunged back into the darkness.
