Chapter XXI

Nevada

I know what you're thinking: yes, I was still in the tree. It was a very comfortable tree.

Anyways, once we were sure that Ali didn't die in an explosion of stone chips, Bird-Max and I went back to scouting for people that would actually die if they were shot in the stomach with an arrow. That was basically no one.

So much productivity.

We ended up spending most of our time talking and shooting down peacekeepers and other creepy guard persons. You know what's really entertaining? Watching peacekeepers die. I don't know why...

I think I may have mental issues... Oh well...

"Earth to Nevada." Max said, bringing me back from my daydreaming.

"Right," I said, shooting another peacekeeper down. "Sorry."

"What were you thinking about?" She asked.

"Nothing."

"Bullshit. Spill."

I sighed, "I was just... Ugh, I was thinking about what Maddie said."

"What about it?"

"Gaea. If we can't kill her, how do we wake up Ellen?"

Max thought, then shrugged, "Fair point."

"I was hoping for something a little more reassuring than that."

"Well... maybe that answer lies with them."

I rolled my eyes, "Again, not reassuring."

She shook her head, "No, think about it. If we kill all the male villains, then Gary'll wake up, correct?"

"Yeah..."

"Maybe he'll know something about being able to wake her up."

"Rat!"

Max frowned, "Well that was a little uncalled for..."

"No," I corrected. "Rat Man. From the Maze Runner. He doesn't have any magical superpower awesomeness."

Max followed my gaze, "He's surrounded by a bunch of kids..."

"Brainwashed." I shrugged, "He's good at that. Not a superpower."

"Are you sure you can hit him?"

"I may not be as good of a shot as Maddie, but I can hit him. Besides, if I kill him, it may free the kids. That means more to fight on our side."

Max shrugged, "Alright. Go for it."

I armed my bow and pulled the string back. I aimed the tip towards Rat Man's chest and slowed my breathing. I fired, and watched the arrow soar through the air, then hit his chest. He didn't even blink. He just fell forward, and dropped dead.

As the kids looked around, confused as to where they were and what they were doing, I smiled, "Got him!"

When I didn't get a response, I turned to Max, who was slumped over the branch, not moving. When I finally figured out that I could touch her, I checked for a pulse, but was given nothing but cold skin.

Then I realized the horrible truth. If a character randomly drops dead, the host is probably dead too.

Maddie.
