Chapter XVII

Tanner

You know what's really annoying? When people grab your shoulder and make you apparate right after you spend time as a stone-sicle. Yeah, Maddie. I'm talkin' to you.

After I got over the usual coughing and gagging. (I really hope that wears off), I gave Maddie a death glare, "Don't do that again."

"Stop being a wuss. We have work to do."

"Well aren't you just peppy." I countered.

"Oh, full of joy." She agreed sarcastically.

"So... What are we doing again?"

"No idea." When I stared at her, she shrugged, "I figured we'd wing it. Do it as it comes."

"Let us make things easy for you." We spun around to find Isis and Osiris standing behind us. Isis smiled, "You die."

Then they threw really ugly, radioactive looking water at us, which Maddie and I both countered with a fire barricade. Maddie winced, "This is gonna be harder than I thought."

"Ya think?" I said.

Maddie pulled back and manipulated her aura into a silver suit of armor. I did the same with mine, forming gold armor around my own body. Maddie waved her hand, and in a matter of seconds, we were airborne.

"A tornado!" I yelled over the winds, "If I didn't have wings, I would kill you!"

"Fair enough!" Maddie yelled back.

We spun around the cyclone, Maddie and I throwing elemental attacks at Isis and Osiris and ducking out of the way when they returned with attacks of their own. It was tiresome, and I could tell we were doing nothing to control them. Soon, the winds began to lessen, and when I looked at Maddie, I saw her falling towards the ground, unconscious with her armor faded away.

I dived, but I couldn't reach her in time. The wind was helpful enough to give her a soft landing, but it made me go flying in the dirt. I hate it when the wind fights back.

Did I just say that? Yeah, yeah I did. God, life sucks.

When I got enough mud off of my eyes, I ran over to where Maddie landed. She woke up after I smacked her cheek a couple of times. She looked exhausted, and coughed as she whispered, "I'm burned out... My quiver... The freezer pocket."

Her quiver had been wrenched off during the fall and laid a few feet away. I pulled it over and opened the freezer pocket (yeah, I know right? What even...?) to find...

"Water?" I said, pulling the plastic bottle out, "You know this can kill you, right?"

"I have a theory." She said tiredly, "Just give it here."

But I didn't, because at that moment, Isis and Osiris landed on the dirt next to us. Osiris smiled crookedly at me, sending shivers down my spine, "Don't worry. I'll make this quick."

Then there was a hook in his stomach. He fell back, blood spilling across his torso. The hook moved, slicing its curved tip across Isis's neck. She fell forward, blood oozing from underneath her, and I let out a sigh of relief, noticing for the first time that I'd been holding my breath.

"Well wasn't that nice timing!" I said.

"Mhm." Josh sassed, "Just FYI, you needed my hook to kill them. Swords of Power and all that jazz."

Maddie sighed, "In my defense, I read the last book a year ago and I don't have a perfect memory. If you wanted flawlessness, you shoulda talked to Lucas, and even then you'd be way off."

"Fair enough."

Maddie groaned, "Tan. Water."

"Right, sorry." I handed her the bottle, but before she could even untwist the cap, we heard a scream. I gasped, "Ida."

I stood and sprinted towards the sound, leaving Josh and a confused-looking Maddie in my wake.
