Stormy Night

Tossing and turning
Unable to sleep
The sound of rain fills my mind
Blocking out everything else

But eventually
The steady hum
Sings me into unconsciousness.

Thunder besieges my fitful dreams
Lightning flashes through my memories
Creating things that were not there before

Lengthened shadows cast away
Wind whistles
Trying to calm me but failing
As I leap out of bed and cower
Away from the storm that shakes my existence.

Until the sun creeps over the horizon
And dashes away the sorrows that have festered in my heart
Clearing away the rain

And making me smile.
