Once upon a time
I happened to realize
Just how little life meant to me
And that thought made me cry
Because we all deserve to die.
I wonder how many lie awake at night and
Speculate what it would be like if they were gone
Feel like they were just a pawn
In the grand scheme of things,
And know that it was true.
Once upon a time I
Looked upon my years and realized
How I was wasting them.
Once upon a time the clouds raced each other in the bright blue sky
Once upon a time the stars giggled and winked at each other as they exchanged secrets in the moon's loving arms
And once upon a time, I didn't think about these things.
Once upon a time,
The car headlights streaked across the tunnel ceiling
Red snakes sliding
I looked up from my book
And realized how much I was missing.
Once upon a time, I glorified the outside
And lived life as I knew it should be.
I buried myself in stories of other people's adventures
Not bothering to forge my own,
I saw life through the pages of a book
I saw a world where everything worked out in the end.
For, sometimes, I just want to get sucked inside
Because everything inside those inked words
Would be all mine.
I'd choose when to live and love and die,
Yes, once upon a time.
