Dan's POV
Did that really just happen? Did that black haired, blue eyed boy, Phil Lester, actually come and talk to Dan?
Well, he must have, because Dan could see Phil's retreating form heading back towards a group of crowded tables. He had so many friends, why would he want to come and talk to him of all people?
It made Dan's head spin. And to think for a minute Phil was his soulmate...
With a heavy heart, Dan stood up, leaving his lunch forgotten on the table, and walked out of the canteen, avoiding the stares people were giving him, not daring to look back at Phil Lester, not knowing that Phil was watching him the whole time, his heart aching for Dan.
It felt good to be away from the canteen, after all that had just happened. Now he had to face his friends. Oh God, what was PJ going to think when he came back, alone?
Dan rerouted towards the bathrooms. Luckily for him, it was empty, so that offered him some privacy. He got his phone out of his jeans pocket to check the time and saw he had a message from PJ asking where he was. Dan ignored it and put his phone back in his pocket.
Not wanting to let anyone find him, Dan went into one of the cubicles and locked the door. He sat down and held his head in his hands. He ran his fingers through his hair, not caring what happened to it.
I don't have a soulmate. I am alone. The only person I can possibly think of is Phil - but he could never be with someone like me. He doesn't deserve someone like me. Nobody deserves me. That's why I'm alone. I'm not good enough for anyone.
But I am supposed to be alone, why am I suddenly getting these weird feelings about a boy I just met? Why can't I stop thinking about Phil Lester?
Dan was so overwhelmed with feelings that he began to cry. He had no dignity left anyway. He just sat there holding his head, letting the tears slide one by one down his face until it turned into a steady stream.
The taste of salt was on Dan's lips as the tears continued to fall. Dan was so upset he couldn't even think of a salty meme to cheer him up.
The door to the toilets burst open with a bang and Dan stopped crying abruptly. He just sat there, silently shaking, hoping whoever had just come in would be quick and leave as soon as possible.
The person, whoever it was, didn't notice the cubicle Dan currently occupied was locked and went into the one next to him.
Dan sat quietly as he waited for the person to leave. It terrified him when the person next door began hitting the walls of the cubicle with his fists and head.
The thin wall separating the Dan and the other person shook as they continued hitting it. Dan heard the person give a strangled cry and break off, leaving them both in the stark silence of the bathroom. It was so quiet Dan could practically hear his heart beating.
"Where can I find you?" The voice said, almost desperately. "Where are you?" they cried, before opening the door to their cubicle and walking out. Dan heard the taps turn on and splashing sounds. Dan could hear whoever it was crying.
Dan couldn't help it. He walked to the door of his cubicle and pressed his face to the crack where the hinges joined the door to the wall. In front of the sink, washing beads of blood from his fists, tears running down his face, looking utterly broken, was Phil Lester.
Dan stood back in horror away from the slit in the door. But Dan knew that the image of Phil in the bathroom mirror crying and bleeding would be forever branded in his mind.
He wanted to help. He wanted to help Phil. But he couldn't. He was too afraid. What would Phil think if he knew Dan had been in here the whole time?

Phil's POVThe water from the tap went pinkish as it hit the sink and washed down the drain. His knuckles were bleeding from where he had repeatedly struck the walls of the toilet cubicle.
Phil couldn't help crying. All his life he had been surrounded by a group of supportive friends, family, but the one time that was truly supposed to be important, he had no one at all.
And Phil was terrified.
Terrified of being alone forever. Which is how, after he had saw Daniel Howell leave the canteen without looking at him he had run. Run to here. Where he thought he was alone. He didn't know that somebody else was already in the bathroom and had heard and seen what Phil was doing.
Phil gripped onto the edge of the sink as the flow of water continued to run.
What is wrong with me? I can't do this. I can't...
Phil heard a lock click behind him and spun around, horror struck. Somebody was in here. Had been there before him. Had heard everything.
His heart leapt into his throat as the door was slowly pushed open by a shaking hand. If any of his friends found out about this...
The door finally opened fully, revealing who was behind it.
Daniel Howell.
Phil's eyes widened as he took in the puffy red eyes and tear tracks on Dan's face. He had been crying too.
"D..Dan?" Phil stammered, looking as Dan came out of the cubicle.
Dan looked up nervously. "P...Phil... I'm so sorry I didn't mean to overhear anything or invade your privacy you just kind of came and... and..."
Phil walked over and put his hand on Dan's shoulder. It was an instinct. He gazed into Dan's deep brown eyes and said "It's ok. I'm ok. You were upset, I was upset, let's just not talk about it. Alright?" Phil looked at Dan apprehensively.
A ghost of a smile appeared on Dan's lips. "Ok." Dan turned to leave, but before he walked out of the door, Phil stopped him. "Dan?" Dan turned around and looked at him. "Yeah?"
"Can we be friends?" Phil felt a sudden stab of fear, what of Dan said no?
But Dan looked up at Phil, his eyes shining with wonder. "You want to be friends... with me?"
Phil laughed "Well who else am I asking, the sinks? Yes Dan, I'm asking you. Do you want to be my friend?"
Dan broke into a grin, his dimple popping in his cheek. "Yes. Yes Phil, I would like to be your friend. I'd like that a lot. See you around." and without another word, Dan turned around and disappeared around a corner.
