Mr.Tanner's class
My plan was simple. At the end of class, stop him before he leaves. As soon as the bell rang I got up to stop him.
"Excuse me. I'm on the welcoming committee and I was assigned to show you around. Now you wouldn't want me....."
"Hey Stefan, there's an opening on the football team and the coach asked me to get you to come."
"I don't know the rules."
"Can you run?"
"Yes."
"Can you catch?"
"Yes."
"That's all you need to do."
"Lead the way."
When he left I heard some people snicker. I felt the tears well up in the back of my eyes. I wasn't going to cry in front of them. I walked out of the building and back home. Judith would make a fuss about me being home early but I needed to be alone. When I got there, her car was gone. I let myself in and went to the living room. A few minutes later I heard a car pull into the driveway and the tears came. I ran out the back door so I didn't have to see anyone. I knew where to go to be alone. It was a walk but that didn't matter. The cemetery was split into two parts. I went to the newest part where my parents were buried. I sat down in front of the grave and let my bangs fall in my face.
"I told you she would be here."
Bonnie.
"You were right."
Meredith. They sat down next to me and I looked at them.
"What does a girl need to do to be alone."
"Tell us to leave," Meredith said as she started to get up.
"I never said to leave."
She sat back down and threw a handful of grass at us. Bonnie and I threw a handful of grass back. I took the peach ribbon out of my hair and they stopped throwing grass. Meredith was looking at Bonnie who had a blank face.
"Something is waiting for you Elena."
She was in a trance. As soon as she snapped out of it we started walking towards the exit. I hadn't realized how dark it had gotten. I felt a presence behind us and I could tell they felt it too. Meredith grabbed Bonnie's arm and we started running. I felt it getting closer and the feeling got stronger. We were near the Wickery bridge when Bonnie stopped.
"Bonnie, come on. It can't follow us over running water," I said, not sure how I knew that. We ran across and the feeling was gone. We were safe.
I watched the girls run from something but I was too weak to tell what. I walked out by the graves and picked up something. To human eyes it would look gray, but to me it was peach. Her hair ribbon.
"Bonnie, where were you girls?"
It was Bonnie's older sister, Mia. We went back to Bonnie's house after we left the cemetery.
"We were looking for Elena and found her at the cemetery."
"Something attacked an old man there a little while ago. Don't go back there until whatever did it is caught."
"Fine."
