Chapter 3: Final Preparation

"I'd rather dig a ditch than go to a dinner party with people I don't know." -Marian Keyes

The closer it gets to the dinner invitation at our new neighbor's house, the more anxious I get. I'm getting so much more nervous and suddenly don't want to go. But we already told Mrs. Joan that we would, and I had told her it was a great idea.

I looked at the time on my Galaxy S4 and it was 5:55. I jumped up from the floor and grabbed a nice pair of Miss Me bootcut jeans, my Troublemaker tee shirt made my "Lyrics Tees", and a pair of purple socks with my Justin Gypsy boots.

I put a sleepy Tucker in his cage and he just laid right down, after he rotated in a circle like dogs do when their trying to find a comfortable spot. I left my room and walked about five steps further til the end of the hallway, where my own personal bathroom was. A few boxes of toiletries sat untouched on the sick counter. The boxes were labeled "Leilani's bathroom." My bathroom. Because I didn't have to share with anyone.

I locked the bathroom door and turned on the hot water of my new shower. I looked at my bathroom while the water was heating up. It was painted with the same ugly cream shell white paint. My nose crinkled in disgust. The vanity was big, with out three or four feet of counter space on each side of the sink, and a vanity mirror that was as long as the counter top and about four feet wide.

I opened the box that said "Shower supplies" and dug for my shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. I opened another box that was labeled "Towels" and pulled out two towels, a small towel for my hair and a large towel for my body.

When the water was hot, I stripped out of my old clothes and jumped right in.

I didn't realize how tense I was until the hot water ran down my body and all of my muscles screamed in relaxation. I sighed in comfort and closed my eyes, allowing the water to run down my face and through my long brown hair.

I squeezed a small amount of shampoo in the palm of my small hand and rubbed it in my hair until it was lathered in my hair evenly.

It only took me 15 minutes to take my shower and when I was done, I turned off the shower head and then I reached for the small towel first. I wrapped it around my wet hair and then grabbed the larger towel. I wrapped it around my dripping body and then stepped out of the shower.

I started to dry myself off and then I slipped my bra straps over my shoulder blades before I could clasp it in the back. I slipped my new underwear on over my hips and then I grabbed my tee shirt.

Once I was dressed, I located the box that held my hair supplies and I opened it up. I took out my hair dryer and unrolled the cord. I plugged it into one of the outlits and then retrieved my curling iron as well. I plugged it in and turned it on so that it would heat up.

I turned on my loud hair dryer and started to blow dry my hair.

When my hair was dry, I reached for my curling iron and I started to curl my hair into tight curls.

I unplugged my hair dryer and curler and left them on the counter before I left my bathroom. I hung my towels on the shower rod and walked out, switching off the light.

I went back to my room real quick to check on Tucker and grab my phone. Tucker was still sleeping, so I left him alone. I grabbed my phone off of the charger just as my dad came in. He had trimmed is goatee and mustache. He was wearing a nice button up shirt, his nice pair of Wranglers, with his lace up boots, and his hair slicked back. He looked like a true Southern man.

"We're leaving now, Leilani. Come on," he said.

"Okay," I said. I stood up and slipped my phone into my back pocket. I walked up to my dad and he wrapped me up in a hug.

"You look beautiful, Lani," he said, kissing the top of my head.

"Thanks, Daddy," I said.

"Come on. You're mother is waiting for us. You need to take your medication before we leave," he said, pulling back to look at me.

"Okay," I said. My medication. The pills that keep my attacks under control.

The two of us walked to the kitchen, where my mom was waiting for us, dressed in a nice skirt and a button up blouse. Her jet black hair was curled and hung off of her shoulders. The black of her skirt worked well with her tanned Italian skin. She smiled when she saw us.

"You look beautiful, honey," she complimented me.

"Thanks, Mom," I said, returning her smile. I reached for my medicine bottle, that held the small pearl shaped pills that did so much to much to control my panic attacks.

I rolled one pill into my hand and popped it in my mouth. My mom handed me a glass that had a small amount of water and I drank all of the water, feeling the spherical pill roll down my throat.

"Ready?" my mom asked.

"Yes ma'am," I answered.

The three of us left the house and my dad locked the door. I looked across the street and eyed the intimidatingly beautiful two story house that we were walking to.

It was tall and magnificent. It looked as if a happy family lived in it.

And it made me nervous.
