Chapter 22: Bigger Reunions in the Making

"Chi si volta, e chi si gira, sempre a casa va finire."- Italian saying.

Translation: "No matter where you go or turn, you will always end up at home."

After two long days of hospital visits with my great-uncle, my mom and dad had showed up. They ended up getting in at around 10:45 while Connor and I were at Starbucks.

I pulled into my aunt's driveway and I saw my dad's newly used 2009 Dodge Challenger in the driveway. I parked the truck and Connor and I climbed out. We walked up to the house hand in hand and walked through the front door.

I heard voices coming from the kitchen and that's where we went. I saw my parents sitting at the table with my aunt and uncle and they were drinking coffee.

"Hey, Mom and Dad," I said, letting go of Connor's hand so I could hug my parents.

"Hey, honey. How were your two days with your aunt and uncle? I hope you two didn't drive them crazy," my mom said with laughter in her voice.

"Of course not! We were perfect angels," I defended us with my hands on my hips.

The four adults in the room laughed at me and Connor chuckled behind me.

"Where have you two been sleeping?" my father asked.

"Aunt Janice put us both in one of the guest rooms," I answered.

I guess my parents really trust me, because they didn't say anything about that arrangement. They just gave a nod of their heads.

"Leilani, your father and I are going to the hospital this afternoon to see Zio Carlo. Were you and Connor going to go over there as well?" my mom asked me.

"No, ma'am. We are going to let you and dad go by yourselves today. We've been over there the past two days for most of the day. We'll go see him again tomorrow before you and Dad," I explained.

"Alright. I just needed to know," she said.

"Okay. Connor and I will be in our room if you need us," I said. I kissed my parents and aunt and uncle and then walked back to Connor. I took his hand and pulled him along with me down the hall to our room.

Just as I opened the door, my mother called me again. I groaned and Connor chuckled. He kissed my cheek and said, "Go. I'll wait for you." I nodded and ran back down the hallway.

"Yes, ma'am?" I asked when I got back to the kitchen.

"I was wondering if you've had any nightmares lately," she said curiously.

"Huh." Now that she brought it up, I finally thought about it. And I can't say that I did. "Actually, no, I haven't had any," I answered.

"Really? You have one almost every night," she said incredulously.

"I know. I wonder why I haven't. I mean, I'm glad that I haven't had any, but I wonder why," I said.

"We can worry about that another time, Leilani, okay? I'm just glad that you're getting better with this stuff," she said.

"Me, too," I said. I gave her another kiss and left the kitchen again.

I ran back down the hallway to the guest room and saw Connor come out of the bathroom.

"Hello, there, beautiful," he said cheekily when he saw me. I laughed and grabbed my laptop from my suitcase.

"Hello, there," I giggled back as we climbed in the bed together. I turned on my laptop and laid my head on his chest. We had planned to have a whole day in bed together watching Netflix all day if we could.
