Chapter 36: Is That What I Think It Is?

"Sometimes a little heartbreak is a lesson, and the best thing to do is just learn the lesson." -Jon Voight

The next morning, I woke up with a terrible headache. I had cried myself to sleep, and to top it off, I had an awful nightmare again.

I dragged myself out of bed and I tiredly changed into a pair of cut off shorts, a red plaid button up shirt, and then a pair of sandals.

I rolled the sleeves of my shirt up to my elbows, strapped on my sandals, and then I went to my bathroom so that I could wash my face and brush my teeth and hair. I tired my hair into a tight ponytail and then went back down the hall to my bedroom. I grabbed my phone from the charger and turned it on while I grabbed my backpack and truck keys.

On my way into the kitchen with Tucker, my phone buzzed in my back pocket, so I removed it and unlocked it. I had a text from Connor. I smiled as I read his message.

From: Boyfriend
Good morning to my beautiful girl. I hope you have a wonderful second day and I cannot wait to hear about it again tonight. Keep wearing that beautiful smile and everyone is going to love you. <3

I teared up while I read his message, but the smile on my face wasn't going anywhere. I typed back a quick reply.

To: Boyfriend
Thank you, baby! I love you so much. I cannot wait to talk to you again tonight! <3 Have a great show tonight! I know you always do!

I slipped my phone back into my hack pocket and entered the kitchen happily. I poured a glass of tea and grabbed two pills: Advil and my usual medicine. I set them on the table so that I could feed Tucker and then I made a two toaster waffles to eat.

I ate one waffle with syrup before I took the pills.

Just before I started eating the second waffle, my dad came into the kitchen. "Good morning sweetheart. Sleep well?" he asked me as he popped two waffles into the toaster as well.

"No," I mumbled as I took a sip of my tea.

"No? You didn't wake up screaming in the middle of the night," he pointed out.

"That's because I woke up with sweats and I couldn't breathe for a couple of seconds," I told him.

"Sweats? That hasn't happened to you before," he frowned.

"I know," I sighed.

"Do you want to tell me about it?" Dad asked.

I cleared my throat and shook my head. "Um, no. I'm just gonna head over to the campus. Try to find my first classroom. Bye, Daddy," I said hastily as I finished my tea and put my dishes in the sink.

"Leilani, you know what happens when you don't talk to us about your nightmares," my dad warned me.

"I'll be fine, Dad. Goodbye," I said quickly. I grabbed my backpack and keys and pressed a kiss to my dad's cheek before I hurried out of the door.

I climbed into my truck and drove off.

I sat in the silence of my truck while I drove onto campus, but since I was an hour and a half early, I sat in the parking lot.

I started to get dizzy and my vision blurred. I groaned and put my face in my hands.

"Connor?"

Nothing.

I walked up the stairs to his room as I called his name again.

"Connor, I know you're home. I saw the bus. Where are you?"
