Chapter 13: New Job?

“Opportunities don’t often come along. So, when they do, you have to grab them.” –Audrey Hepburn

Rowan brought out my cinnamon roll and coffee about five minutes later and I thanked her again, continuing to fill out my application.

I nibbled the cinnamon roll, trying to focus on the paper work on the clipboard in front of me, and sipped my coffee.

The bell above the door rang, but I didn't think anything of it, continuing to fill out the application that I was almost finished filling out.

I stood up, finally finished with the application, and I brought it back up to Rowan. "Hey, Rowan, do I hand this to you?" I asked, showing her my finished paperwork.

"Yes. I'll take it," she said. "Thank you! Hopefully, they give you the job," she added with a smile.

"Yeah, me, too. Thanks, Rowan," I said with a big smile.

"You're welcome, Leilani!" she grinned. I laughed and allowed her to get back to work while another customer came up to order. I went back to my table and sat down to finish my cinnamon roll.

"Hey, Leilani! You're here early," a familiar male voice said.

I looked up and saw Connor, Riley, and Toby standing there next to my booth. They slid into the seats and Connor claimed the spot next to me. Riley was directly in front of me and Toby was diagonal from me, next to the end of the seat.

"I've been here since you left my house. This was my errand. I had to fill out a job application," I explained.

"Cool! You're gonna be working here?!" Toby said excitedly.

"Hopefully," I answered.

"Peppy Mochas for Connor, Riley, and Toby," the barista, but not Rowan, called out.

"Be right back," Connor said, sliding out of the seat.

"So! You and our brother, huh, Lani?" Riley spoke when Connor was out of earshot.

"Huh?" I asked stupidly, maybe since I wasn't paying attention because I was thinking about Connor.

Riley and Toby laughed but didn't say anything because Connor was coming back with their drinks. "Thanks, Connie!" Toby laughed, taking the drink from Connor.

Connor laughed and looked at us. "Did I miss something?" he asked.

"Nope!" Riley said, grabbing his coffee and taking a sip.

Connor gave me a quizzical look, and my heart started racing. I smiled and he smiled back, which didn't help.

Toby cleared his throat and I yanked my gaze away from Connor's, taking a sip of my own coffee. Someone sighed but I didn't look up to see who it was.

"So, what did you guys have planned for today when you asked me to hang out?" I asked them, changing the subject.

"We just wanted to hang out. Wanna go to Universal Studios?" Riley asked.

My eyes grew and I grinned. "Yes!" I whisper-shouted.

"Let's go then!" Toby cheered, pushing Riley from the booth, which made all of us laugh.

Connor slid out of the booth to let me out and I thanked him. He smiled at me and the four of us took our drinks in our hands before we left Starbucks. I made my way to my truck when I heard my name being called.

I turned and watched Connor toss his keys to Riley, who winked at Connor. Connor turned and ran up to me. "Mind if I ride with you?" he asked, giving me a smile.
