Imagine my embarrassment when my attempt at respect caused another round of hissing laughter from the Lycan throats around me!

"He is an omega!" Someone said.

There was more laughter that was cut short by a very fierce growl. My mate tore into them snapping her jaws viciously. I could hear her through their pack link.

He's a werewolf alpha and even if he was an omega what's wrong with omegas? She viciously shouted out mentally!

I expected bloodshed but all I saw was more humor still. They backed away respectfully, but none of them bowed or showed their necks.

I could feel their mind talk. It was whispers and emotions. I could feel the respect and love they had for my mate. I realized this was her family.

"Come closer, I won't bite," said the Lycan queen.

My mate came up to my side. Many of the Lycans stood on two legs and had fur like my mate had earlier. Right now my mate was all huge wolf and I felt puny next her in my furless man-form.

"Do not feel less than you are," said the queen. She still laid on her side but had a more human form. I'd never tried to shift laying down! I'm learning so much from these Lycans!

The Queen stood, a graceful movement.

"I think we have been away from each other for too long, Lycans and werewolves," said the Queen. "We have each forgotten how the other lives. Can you promise to be patient with my daughter as she tries to understand your ways?"

"Of course I will, she is my everything!" I responded.

The Queen shook her head. My mate was on two legs now slipping her furred hand into my smooth one.

"Your words come from the goddess bond, not your head and your heart. Picture your home. Picture my daughter doing something no one understands. Imagine explaining something for the hundredth time that day."

She gave me time. I remembered the guards laughing. The Queen was right, it was going to be hard. I looked at my mate. She was worth it!

"I will try very hard, the best I can, every day for the rest of my life..."

I was knocked down... by my mate! I didn't understand at all! I got back up but was crestfallen.

My mate moved my chin so I was looking at her.

"Stupid werewolf," she growled. "The right answer is you won't always be able to be patient. You will get frustrated and so will I, just like I am now. That doesn't make you less my mate, and it doesn't mean we can't forgive each other when we get impatient with each other. It's better to know you're going to get mad at me sometimes and that's ok. I'm going to get mad at you sometimes too. If you know that now, you won't feel hurt and think stupid things, you'll know it's just the way it is between people sometimes."

She called me her mate!!!! It took a second before the rest of what she said began to sink in. While it did she jabbed my shoulder growling in frustration at my denseness.
(Is denseness a word?)

I couldn't help smiling at her.

"Stop that," she growled.

"I can't help it, I love you!"

"Look," she growled again, "I got mad at them for picking on you, but they're family and I don't hold a grudge. If I get mad at you..."

Suddenly she was wolf and snapping in my face, her breath hot against my cheek, her teeth snapping shut in front of my nose. Her lips closed on my nose and I almost fell back in surprise. My mate kissed me!!!!

I grinned again and I knew she could feel what I was feeling. She huffed but I could feel the growing affection she had for me.

We looked at each other and then we both laughed at the same time again.

"Yes," I told the Lycan Queen. "I understand. We are going to have an interesting life. We will get mad and maybe even fight with each other, but we will never hurt each other. I don't want any other life. I'm grateful your daughter accepted me!"

I squeezed her hand, in awe of the Queen's wisdom. With one simple question she made sure we would be working together no matter how hard things got.

I looked at my mate adoringly. She was wise too! Knowing we would get frustrated and mad at each other, but also knowing we loved each other anyway, meant we wouldn't hold grudges. I was more than willing to face any difficulties as long as my beautiful mate was by my side!
