Once upon a time...
(I couldn't resist starting at least one story this way😂)

There was one of those wars that happen now and again, where a group of rogues thought they could take over. They failed of course, but the fighting was not without casualties. One pack in particular suffered the loss of both its Alpha and Luna, leaving their young teenage daughter to lead their pack. While the girl being both young and a female didn't bother this pack, the fact that she suffered from a rare incurable disease did.

Please, Moon Goddess, send me my mate early! I need someone to help with my pack!

The youngest female alpha in the history of werewolves let it be known that she was looking for her mate to be Alpha of her pack. The offer to come visit her pack was spread far and wide, and included the facts of her medical condition.

There came to be a constant flow of visitors to her territory. She growled and threw a few out on their ear when it became obvious they only wanted her pack! Some good came out of it all though; many un-mated members of her pack found their mates, but not her.

She was exhausted after a fruitless week, filled with both large groups and small, but none as small as what was being escorted into her office now. She stood to shake her solitary visitor's hand.

"Thank you so much for permitting me to enter your territory, Alpha Shelly," the young man said.

"It's an honor to have you visit..." she waited for her visitor to provide a name.

"Adam," he said with a smile.

"And your pack?"

"Hm? Oh, Mountain Pack."

"That's the name of your pack? No offense but it's, umm, not moon related."

The young man laughed. "My pack is small but fierce. Our territory is actually pretty vast, considering no one else lays claim to the mountains that our pack is nestled in."

There was something about the young man that the female alpha found familiar. She wondered if perhaps her age or illness was interfering with the pull mates usually felt around each other; and her summer cold didn't help her sniffer any!

"Usually I let my guests stay in the pack house, if that's ok. I would be honored if you'd join me for dinner."

He said that would be fine, and left to freshen up before rejoining her downstairs. (I always wondered why stories have the alpha's office upstairs and not on the ground floor of the pack house. Maybe there's two? One to handle pack business and a smaller one off the alpha's bedroom for more privacy?)

Shelly found herself enjoying dinner, laughing for the first time since her parent's died. Adam was considerate and witty. She felt connected to him, not understanding why he seemed so familiar. Shelly finally came to the conclusion that they must be mates. She finally found someone she was comfortable leaving her pack with. His pack territory actually touched hers along the one border. She was surprised at his reaction when she gathered enough courage to broach the subject.

He sputtered out the sip of water he had just taken. "My dear, beautiful Alpha, I cannot be your mate!"

"Why not?" Shelley asked, aggravated. "Don't tell me you don't feel our connection!"

"I do feel a connection to you. But I can't be your mate because I just became aware of my mate while I was waiting for you in your gardens," Adam said, slightly embarrassed. "She's the omega that tends them. I had asked the Moon Goddess for a mate who would bring beauty and color into my life, and she granted my request!"

Alpha Shelley was heartbroken! "It's just that you feel so familiar, even though we had never met before!"

Adam looked even more embarrassed. "Maybe because we actually had met..." Suddenly he just blurted out, "It was me, ok? A year ago, it was me!" Adam lowered his head in chagrin.

Shelley looked at him in disgruntlement. What was he going on about? A year ago... a year ago she and her father had been on their way to visit a friend of his. She had run off, wanting to be totally free of stress and worry for at least a day. She had always pictured her lost wolf as a special white wolf, and her mate having a black wolf. She was so excited to have run into one that day. She had met the most friendly, wonderful black wolf! She had shared all of her private thoughts with... Adam?

"You were the wolf in the woods?" And he wasn't her mate. He had his own Goddess-blessed mate, a mate she couldn't refuse him. Shelley felt like crying. The one hope she had held out for was that if she could hold out, live long enough to find her mate, their bond just might be enough to heal her.

"I fell in love with you that day," Adam said, "even if we aren't mates. I fell in love with your strength and determination, your inner beauty... not that you aren't beautiful on the outside," he hastily added. Adam came around the table, kneeling before her and taking her hands. "I would be honored, truly honored, if you would be willing to be my sister. I do feel connected to you. I don't know why. I felt it right from that day we met as well. We could join our packs together. Who knows? Knowing you have someone to help watch over your pack might keep those greedy wolves away. Your mate might still be out there. You weren't going to give up the day we met. Don't give up now!"

Shelley had asked for help, and got it, if not in the form of her mate. The young man was so sincere, and looked at her with such compassion, she couldn't refuse his kind offer. Maybe a family type bond was what she had felt. Even that day in the woods a year ago, she had been comfortable enough with Adam to share her heart with him.

Sister, she considered thoughtfully. Joining her pack to his. She glanced at the young woman waiting in the wings for a man she didn't even know. Shelley decided she did know Adam enough to trust him with her pack. She nodded her agreement, blinking back her tears.

Adam smiled in relief. He didn't know how it would all work out, but knew somehow the Moon Goddess had her hand in these events. And this young girl in front of him? He smiled at her fondly. He'd been an only child and had always wanted a sister. Today he found both sister and mate!
