Poseidon, god of the seven seas.
Poseidon, spawn of Rhea and Cronus.
Poseidon, slayer of the Titans.
Poseidon, the God whose heart is shattered indefinetly.
. . . .
Poseidon ran across the ocean floor looking for any sign of his mortal love. In his heart, he felt her body hit the jagged rocks, he just hoped he could reach her in time. The creatures of the deep cried as they watched her body descend. She floated down quickly almost as if she was weighted with rocks.
He could see her body fall, her clothes were torn and blood spilled from her head. Just as he tried to reach her, the sea floor opened to reveal the fire and brimstone of the underworld. He was too late. Her soul belonged to Hades now.
. . . .
Hades sat slouched in his throne, his arm jerked outward; feeding the last bits of steer to Cerberus. He was inexplicably bored with the drawl of this "occupation", every second a soul would drift down and their screaming was endless and unnecessary.
Persephone had just returned from the mortal world and she was more reserved than usual. Persephone's heart was yearning for the life she once lived. Basking in the sunlight and greeting the flowers as they sprouted, was her only joy in life and now that was gone. Everything was gone.
The same day Hades had been advised by Eros, the patron of love, that giving his wife a sense of contentment would lead to him finally earning her heart. Stealing some seeds from Demeter, Hades for the first time created a gift - A Garden of Life. Life, actual life blossoming in the underworld, it was simply unheard of.
This garden sprouted the most unique and deadliest of flowers; hemlock, oleander, datura, and bloodroots. This was Hades' first attempt at creating life so it is only fitting that he would create death in life.
As Hades presented this garden to his love, she was overcome with feeling. None other had produced such a spectacle for her before. For years she condemned Hades' and his kingdom of decay and truly this was the first time she'd felt at home in the foreign land. Indeed, the plants were born of death but they represented something greater; o thánatos den eínai pánta telikós.
. . . .
Poseidon for years, could have anything he desired at his fingertips. He conceived endless amounts of creatures to fill the oceans he ruled, and yet he had never had the innocent feeling of love. The thing about humans is, they only live for a short while. This is why Gods are advised not to create romantic attachments.
He knew that their love couldn't last; loving a human was unstable but it was pure. His brothers were of no assistance, Zeus instigated and performed this plan, and worst of all Hades was aware of their brothers' plan and his warning was nonexistent.
His love, his human, his Celene's soul was adrift somewhere in the underworld, and by any means necessary he would have her once again.
Poseidon placed hands on the sea floor and it parted once again. Arriving at Hades' throne he approached his brother with a scowl. Deep breaths inflated his lungs and calmed the sea roaring on land and in his heart. In the underworld there were constant screams of dearly departed, who prayed for salvation only to remain in Hades' hells cape.
Hades rested peacefully against his throne of caster white skulls and fire, he knew Poseidon would come for him, if he could only recall the words Zeus ordered him to say.
You see Eros' aid had come with a price. Hades must turn his brother away from the soul of Celene. He must convince Poseidon that she is gone forever, and his marriage to Persephone would finally be consummated. Eros would give Persephone's heart to Hades if he completed this task.
Poseidon enters calmly, he looks toward his coward of a brother and says "where is she?" in almost too placid tone he continues, "I know she's here"
Hades responds, "She is, like them all, you know this as well as I"
Poseidon's anger is escalating at an alarming rate, "I want her back, I know you can bring her back", he insists, "I have her body, I know you can bring her back"
Hades releases a long sigh with a shake of his head, he knows that Poseidon will not abandon this foolish quest and for the sake of marriage he must quash this in its tracks. Hades explains to Poseidon the laws which they so wrote during the inception the universe. Laws that must be abided by, laws forbid the resurrection from death.
A heartbroken and stubborn Poseidon in one last fleeting attempt, bounds toward the abyss of souls. Here the dammed souls cry out for salvation on an endless loop, it is known most commonly as the River Styx.
Reaching his hand forward in a last desperate attempt he sees the apparition of his love, but she slips through his hands much like the sea foam that crashes against the shore. Silent whimpers escape his deflated chest, an overwhelming rush of emotions flood his heart.
"Brother she is gone," Hades places his pale hand upon Poseidon's shoulder in an act of guilt, "Celene is dead"
Poseidon is a God, and Gods are not bound by the laws of humanity.
