Chapter 18

Heather's POV

We were almost back to the mall when we had to stop for the night. Cam was slowing us down but that didn't matter. We found a box truck to camp out in for the night. The whole place looked like a ghost town. It was amazing how fast this thing had spread. I could tell Nash was pretty worried about his family and so was Cam. I was just worried about them. Nash laid his head on my shoulder and closed his eyes. I sighed and kissed his head. It was like I was the man in this relationship. Cam gave me a soft smile and scooted next to me, wincing in pain.

"Hey," he said quietly.

"Hi," I replied. Nash moved his head down to my lap and was fast asleep.

"So I guess you two are really giving it a go?" he asked.

"Yup" I said popping the 'p'. I sighed and looked at Cam.

"It coulda been you, but I guess Im not your type".

"THAT'S....not true" he finished quietly as Nash shifted in my lap.

"I don't want to fight with you about this Cameron." I snapped silently. He nodded and sighed. I was with Nash now and hopefully for good. Cam laid his head on mine.

"Im sorry, about causing drama and leaving and for everything. I-I have a question." he said cautiously.

"Yeah......"

"When Nash said your leg was hurt, was he really talking about the cut from the car?" he asked. I looked down in disgust. "I'll take that as a no...was it because of me?" he asked with pain in his voice.

"It wasn't you, I just couldn't handle the stress of.....this new world thing" I lied. It was the stress of him replacing me, but I couldn't tell him that.

"I don't believe you." he mumbled.

"Well you don't have to" I said sharply. he gave me a weird look. Half angry and half mixed with hurt. "Im sorry. but please don't feel bad about anything. Lets just move on ok?" he nodded. he got on his phone which had very little battery left. once it was gone, no more phone. He went onto the only news site with living people left to write.

"Two scientists are working on a cure and feel they are very close. Dr. Ronald McLaire and Dr. Luna McLaire flew in immediately to LAX to start working in the top notch labs...Heather....are you ok?" he asked after finishing reading. My eyes were filling with tears. "Wait isn't your last name McLaire? are those your-"

"Parents? yeah....yeah they are...and they're in LA....saving the world....."
