"I have to admit I didn't expect to see you tonight," I said. I gave a little laugh but it was pretty obvious the situation wasn't funny. Richard paced the room slowly, peering at all the items in the area like he was trying to memorise the order. His hands clapped together and he rubbed them slowly.
"It's a little cold in this room, isn't it."
His voice was curious and I didn't feel comfortable listening to it. I remember feeling relaxed listening to his voice, before all this shit happened, but now...it sent chills to my spine. "I guess it it."
"Would you like the fire lit?" I didn't answer, it was getting hard to open my mouth and reply to him. I was afraid I would say something wrong and he would snap like he did last time. I swear I felt my neck twinge. He did break my wrist too.
I glanced down at my arm and fiddled with the cast. It was bulky and I had spent my time ignoring it, like my entire arm wasn't there. It just brough back memories and made me feel like I was helpless and weak. I hated the fact that he could do something so simple and it could bring such harm to me.
"I think I'll light it, make you more comfortable."
Trust me, that's not going to happen, mate, I thought.
He pulled out a box of matches from his formal coat pocket and bent down near the fireplace. I had the sudden desire to kick him in when it was lit. I resisted and took a few steps back. My eyes searched the room for a weapon. Unfortunately my hope was dashed and I sighed with defeat.
He rose to his feet and I was surprised not to hear any cracking in his knees. Wow, being a vampire really destroyed old age. Richard neared his hands to the fire and smiled at me over his shoulder. "Now isn't that better?"
I returned a tight smile and nodded my head. I had to admit already the room was warming. This house really was a freezer. There was a late winter outside and no heater going on inside. I wasn't surprised it was freezing cold inside.
I opened my mouth and let out a squeak. He looked at me again and took a few steps in towards me. Unfortunately his strides were huge and he was only a few feet in front of me. "Why are you here?" I said finally.
"To see you...to talk to you," he said smoothly.
"I know that because you're here. Please...tell me why?"
"You know you're going to be daughter-in-law one day..."
I rolled my eyes. "Still going down that road."
Richard's brows narrowed and I cringed. "Just because you're acting like an ignorant child doesn't mean I'm ignoring the fact you are right for my son."
"Maybe I am right for him," I said exasperated, "but that doesn't mean I want to be with him. He's a nice guy and maybe I could think of someday dating him but it would be on my own accord; not because of some bossy King who thinks he's better than me."
Richard's eyes flashed red then black. "I am more important than you. I am the King of the vampire realm."
"I don't care," I stated strongly. I was happy to be feeling some of my old spark coming back to me. "You may be a leader to bloodthirsty creatures but I am better than you because you don't rule me. You can kick me and break me but you will never harm my confidence and pride. I am better than you because I don't use violence and power to get my way because I am human and humanity kicks vampire ass!"
"How dare you talk to me like that."
"No." I shouted pointing one of my fingers at him. "How dare you! You will listen to me for once. You don't own me. You may own the house that you are holding me in but you do not control me."
