Scott's POV

"Hey, nice work, Diaz. Nolan, you stay in there. You can take him." I say to the players as they do their drills. I watch as one of the players makes a shot. "Nice work. That's the best shot of pre-season."

"Thanks, coach." The player says.

"Assistant coach." Coach Finstock says, coming over to me. "What exactly are you doing?" He asks me.

"Drills." I say.

"You're giving them hope. When did I ever give you hope?" Finstock says.

"Never." I say.

"Exactly. Nothing motivates more than withering criticism. Speaking of, um, losers, where's your, uh, where's your little protege?" Finstock asks. I scan the field for Liam.

"Um." I say.

"'Um'? Is 'um' a location? Is 'um' behind me?" Finstock asks.

"He'll be here." I say. "Okay? He's the backbone of this team. He's stepped it up in every way possible. A born leader who can handle anything you throw at him."

Liam's POV

"I can't handle this." I say, laying on my back on a bench in the locker room.

"Yes, you can. You've handled so much worse than this. You're practically the Alpha now." Mason says.

"I'm nothing without her." I say. Mason comes over to me and starts helping me put on my gear.

"Liam, can you help me out here, please?" Mason says.

"Hayden left me." I say.

"Why is your arm so heavy?" Corey asks, helping me with my shoulder pads.

"She moved, to protect her sister. And it's not like she dumped you or anything." Mason says. Mason's phone beeps. "Okay, Scott says Coach is losing it."

"Scott's leaving, too." I say.

"Going to college is not leaving, okay? It's called growing up. And we're all going to be going to different colleges eventually." Mason says.

"I thought we were both applying to UCLA." Corey says.

"You guys are going to the same college?" I ask.

"That is not the point." Mason says.

"What is the point?" I ask.

"The point is, that summer's almost over, we're about to be seniors, this is about to be the best year of our entire lives, and you're still captain of the lacrosse team, so come on, we have to..." Mason says, but he's cut off by us falling backwards after he and Corey start dragging me to the door.

Scott's POV

"McCall, I swear if you don't get Dunbar out here in three, this will be your last day as assistant coach." Finstock says.

"This is my last day as assistant coach." I say.

"I can still dock your pay." Finstock says.

"I'm a volunteer. Do you want my whistle?" I ask, holding up my whistle.

"Who gave you a whistle?" Finstock asks.
