Kevin's P.O.V.

It's 8.34 pm and I'm finally done with organizing the book shop I work at and now I just have to grab my stuff and close the shop.

I went to the back of the shop, got my stuff and the keys and was about to leave. That was until I heard some maniacal laugh coming from one of the isles. I stopped in my tracks, turned around and looked around... No one was there.

'Um, h-hello? Who's there? You shouldn't be here, it um it's closed.' You could hear the nervousness in my voice.

I wanted to ignore it and just walk away, so I turned around again slowly to walk out of here. When I took the first step to the door, I heard silent crying. This time I didn't immediately turn around, I just froze.

There is no one here, so why do I hear crying. It sounds agonizingly close and it's scaring me. Do I check what's there or do I just walk away? If someone's in here and crying I can't just walk away, but that laugh I first heard is definitely holding me back. It didn't sound very pleasant and I'm not sure if I feel like being the hero right now. Was it too much to ask that I could just go home and sleep? It was a long day.

I knew I couldn't go away from here without feeling guilty and when I feel guilty I'm probably not going to be able to sleep at night. So I think the option of 'not being the hero right now' is no option.

I gathered up some courage and walked back into the shop. I had no idea where it was coming from, so I cautiously walked around, actually hoping for another sound... And my wish was granted. Another maniacal laugh came from somewhere from the left of the shop. When I walked to the left there was another cry, which made my route more specific. It sounded like it was coming from isle two.

Isle two was the isle with the darker books, dark as in you aren't allowed to read them if you're under the age of sixteen. Yes, they were that dark. Even though they were books, they could still scare children so we advised them not to read it. Of course, we couldn't stop them if they wanted to, but we did always make clear they would be darker than you would think.

The books were usually about people, children, and grown-ups, who messed around with the wrong kind of higher spirits and get possessed. They're like your usual horror movie, only books have the power to make those themes crueler. Books are more descriptive and use the reader's imagination to show the reader how important it is to stay away from that stuff. Movies have to use jump-scares and other things to make it exciting and nerve-wrecking. Books only need words and your imagination. That's what I think is so beautiful about books and reading, but with these sort of subjects it can be quite scary.

That's why they were in isle two. Two... a number used for the devil as a symbol. I always preferred walking around in isle three or just the other isles.

I mean, with those sounds I could've expected it to be there. I walked closer to the isle and as I got in the path there was another laugh. It sounded so close, like some maniac was standing right next to me. It sent goose bumps all over me. Even though I felt so scared and unsafe, I still walked further. I looked around again, but stil,l I couldn't see anyone. I was afraid to speak and even if I wanted to speak, my muscles probably wouldn't allow me to open my mouth as tense as they were.

I was clueless. Where were these freakish sounds coming from? Is this some sort of prank? Defeated, I decided to lean against a shelf to think, until I heard small sobs coming from across of me. My eyes shot open again, because a few seconds ago they started to feel a little heavy, but now I was awake and alert again. I listened closely and walked to the shelf across of me and when I got close it almost sounded like it was coming from a book.
